I just got done servcing my 04 electra glide for the 7th time, seems so easy
mightthink of doing this part time for people in my area for 1/2 what harley gets
There's a couple of things to keep in mind...if you're the original owner of the '04, 7 times makes you a neophyte. Not being ugly, but just observing. I've got an '07, an' have serviced it 3 times in the year ah've had it, plus helped buds do theirs (for free)- and there's NO way ah'd consider doin' it for others fer profit. To help out a bud, sure - but you'd be wide open for all kinds of potential liability if you screw something up. Even if you have 'em sign a waiver, the legal costs to defend yourself affirming the waiver could be far worse than what you'd be making.
I work on people's bikes around here for a little side income. It's something I enjoy doing, and it helps out those who can't do it themselves.......while saving them from dealership-hell.
I have a nack for preparing taxes(strickly a hobby). i now have a small following and ive never asked them for a dime. now that has backfired on me and they always show up baring gifts/cash and sometimes I even front them half of there return if they need it right away.
Thats how i would start out.
I do all my work on my 06 Glide, it has never seen the Stealer except for a warranty for a new radio. I also let my buddies bring their rides to my shop, and I assist them in the service. One brought his Softail over for an oil change. I put it on the jack, and turned to the manual to find the correct amount of oil. Buddy grabbed a wrench, and instead of taking the oil tank plug loose, he took one of the tapered pipe thread plugs out of the case. When he realized what he did, he reinstalled it, but tightened it too tight and cracked the case. Even though the fault was all his, I felt somehow responsible because I said he could bring it over instead of going to the Dealer.
Bottom line, have an understanding that you are not liable. I have never charged a dime for helping a buddy out, except for materials for paint work. I don't need the bucks that bad, and one bad experience could cost dearly.
