I always wear a DOT helmet anyway but just an FYI on the court costs. I just got a ticket that was a non moving violation. The fine was $25. The court costs in Charlotte (Mecklenburg county) $120!!!!!!! That makes that small ticket a $145 total fine! Fortunatly I got it dismissed in court.
I wear a DOT helmet also. Someone asked about "where they got the training to determine if it wwas a DOT helmet or not",I have an aquaintance who is a LEO and he said something about a specific course being set up for them. Not sure if I believe it or not, but who knows. Oh, I have a NEXL helmet, which is DOT approved, however, the only "markings" it has that states it is the sticker on the back. Nothing on the inside of the helmet says it it. Good luck NC LEOs, you guys are gonna be busy. LOL. Let the riders decide! It should be their choice.
there is no requirement by DOT or NHTSB for a DOT sticker to be in place after the point of sale. there will be a bunch of court cases launched that will never come to actual hearings. Courts are afraid to hear cases in fear of setting precedents. Most riders just pay the ticket which is cheaper than hiring a lawyer to fight.
Helmets saving lives is like life preservers saving boaters from drowning. Yes, it makes sense, but thousands of boaters die from drowning every year and nobody wants to make a national law that requires boaters to strap on an USCG approved PFD every time they step into a boat.
