Just wanted to echo Mr_Bill's comments above - I came from an '07 Road King to a '08 Road Glide, and the improvements in '08 justify looking that way if you are in the market for a new bike. The IDS, throttle by wire, improved enging mounting, and many other small details show a definite maturing of the new platform. I'm really pleased with the Road Glide and the Ultra would have these same improvements.
ecramer - I'm not sure what you mean by "Harley dealers in myareawere a pain to deal with" but you might drive up to the Columbus area, both AD Farrow & Centennial have been very good to me. We bought our Ultra the end of June (at list, like almost all dealers) but they threw in a few goodies and offered a discount on accessories at the time of purchase. They may deal a lot more in Jan-Mar.
I have almost 14,000 miles on her in 5 months and it's very reliable, but if you're looking at new bikes I'd buy the 2008 with the larger tank and available ABS.
The heat has only been a problem for me when it's 90+ and in stop-n-go traffic but in my opinion any large displacement bike is going to be hot in that situation, once you are moving it is not noticeable.
We also installed the Kuryakyn adjustable passenger pegs and my wife is now very happy to ride all day. I believe you can raise or lower the stock passenger floorboards but the Kuryakyn pegs allow more foot/leg positions.
You've rented an Ultra so I don't need to tell you this is the best touring bike made (well the Road Glide isn't to bad either). My only regret is waiting so long to get one.
I have had both shoulders operated for torn rotator cuffs and I also have muscular dystrophy. I ride an 02 ultra with the wife on board and we are having a great time. The Ultra is a great bike and so very comfortable to ride. aM soulders never hurt from riding the bike. All of the problems can be taken care of on the Ultra that you are worried about. I plan on riding as long as I can hold the bike up and then wll convert the Ultra to a trike so I can continue to ride. Good luck.
