We are nearly the same age and I would jump at the chance to do a trip like that.
A friend and I are in the planning stage for a 900 to 1k trip this spring, and I am considering going to Sturgis with my Nephew in Aug with the wifey 2 up behind me. He is kicking around trailering part way so dont know what is going to shake down on the whole trip yet.
If you dont you may regret it later, I know I would regret not going if I had the chance.
EZ nailed it..... enjoy it.... When I left my last job I went from CT to Ohio then worked my way down to Key West. Visted friends along the way and really enjoyed myself. Don't make it as you have to do X miles just go until you start to feel tired grab a hotel and some food. Have a nice night sleep then off again.
EDIT
I wanted to add that this was done over three weeks.... so no problem enjoy
I am 55 also and me and the Misses do 1000 to1400 on a three day weekend alot. Go for it, crank up some ZZ Top and pin her ears back, the bikes that is.
I am not new to HD's but am new to touring models. I have an 08 FLHT, totally stock, and haveaccumulated 1100 miles, mostly commuting 20 miles back and forth to work. By the way, I am not a spring chicken (55 y.o.) but I am not as adventurous as I was 30 years ago. The question is, I have an opportunity to ride solo over the next weekfrom Northern CA to Palm Springs, which is about 1100 miles round trip for me. Is this something you would do? Iknow it's December but here is CA the weather is supposed to be mild (50s to60s) for the next few days. Any encouragement would be appreciated. Or if you have taken a trip and wished you had stayedhome let me know why.
I'm 67 and my wife is 64,...uh, 39 years old, yeah, she is39, and we generally ride 250 to 350 miles per day on a long ride with no problems. You, being just a youngster, may be able to do better but I really don't know what condition you are in.
If you aren't experienced with long rides, don't plan on making the 550 miles there in one day. 550 isn't that hard (at least not on my Road Glide) but if you haven't even done 300 or 400 mile days, don't push it, go about 350 then you'll have a short ride in the next morning and you'll find out where you are gonna be sore and just how sore you're gonna be. Probably make the trip home in one day but that's something you'll have to decide....
Damn crusty, Do it NOW! My father just passed away at 64. He was in perfect shape and health. He was working out in a gym on the stationary bike talking and joking with the other people working out (flirtin with the ladies) he just fell on the floor. Pulmonary Embolism. So i say, DO IT NOW! Life is way to short. I wish i could go.
