I've done 2 things that work. I have used the chin strap to snug the helmet down to the luggage rack back of the passenger back rest with the open part of the helmet facing back to keep the bugs and dirt and rain out. I have also just put it in my overnight bag along with a change of shorts/socks and tooth brush for those 2 or 3 day trips. Both have worked just fine.
I am riding a 2007 Street Glide but when I had a 1994 1200 Sportster, I used to shove the helmet down over the smaller backrest and the use the chin strap to hold it down.
The other solution is to get a solo seat !
Never carried a second helmet, but if you happen to pick up a passenger and you live in a state where there is a helmet lawthe passenger must wear the helmet.
I carry a second helmet, now. Made the mistake of casually slipping the chin strap, where it makes the V over your ear, onto the handle bars and went into Walmart. Came back out and it was gone. Couldn't believe it, who'd want to steal a beat up helmet. Anyway, I kept a low profile and snuck my way to a nearby Honda shop and bought another. Now I have a second one stashed in the trunk of my hack, just in case.
Luckily, no LEO saw me. I sometimes wonder if they would have believed me.
