Hello and here's to a happy Harley New Year!
I have an '05 Glide (103) with vented lowers. Do the lowers create higher engine temps? I get a lot of spark knock and tremendous heat on warm days with a rider.
Should I plan on taking the lowers off this next summer?
You can take the lowers off if you want but your motor won't overheat with them on. I run mine year round with no probles and mine aren't vented. The lowers acutally funnel air to your motor but they do hold hot air in on your legs. The vents should help with that though.
I HAVE RIDDEN ULTRAS FOR YEARS AND NEVER TAKEN THEM OFF.AN OILCOOLER AND SYNTHETIC OIL WITH PLANNED TRIPS NOT IDLING A LOT IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC IS YOUR BEST DEFENSE AGAINST OVERHEATING. HARLEY ALSO OFFERS A FAN FOR CITY TRAFFIC THAT WORKS WELL.
Directly from Pat Koppa, the manager in charge of touring models for HD when I met him this past summer. He said absolutely there is no need to remove the lowers to reduce heat or engine wear. The engine is designed to operate at high temperatures, and as long as you are properly maintaining the bike and using the recommended fuel you should have no problems.
Not really new thread worthy, but he did ask me what I liked about my previous bikes (Yamaha Royal Star Ventures x 2) vs the HD UCEG. I complained about the heat (the RSV is liquid cooled) placement of the PTT button, no OD or 6 speed standard, and no MP3 compatible CD player. He said we are thinking about some of those things, and a bluetooth option. This was 60 days before the 2006 models were introduced... "thinking about it"... yea, right.
He did seem very interested in the things I had to say about what made the RSV a better bike, and yes I said it was a better bike. My opinion of course.
exactly what timbo said if your bike is overheating it is not from the lowers they are designed to direct the air towards the engine so it will cool it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
