There is tons of infoout there on this. But to answer your question a little bit, I was also looking for a shorter cable and could not find one with out ordering online. I was in Wlmt one day and found a Schosche adapter kit in their ipod section. When I looked in the kit, i found it had a 3' aux cable. It was exactly what I was looking for. I used it a while and it worked great.
I then decied to move my player down to the lower part of my tank dash. Ran a 6' aux cable through the dash, front of the tank, front of the neck, and up to the stereo. I like this setup better. No cables hanging around.
Also, do a search for ipod, and gilbos (forum member). Lots of info here on them and gilbos makes a trick custom handlebar mount for ipods.
I went to Radio Shack and found a 12 inch cable and used velcro to attach to my fairing only a few inches away from the aux plug in. I could pull my ipod away from the fairing when I stopped for the night or when I was not secure . I ride an Ultra and used my ipod on a 5100 mile trip. They make handlebar mounts for Ipods also. Look into U-bid or E-bay or J & P cycles. Bldr

Largo Digital sells short cables on line. They have them a little cheaper in their ebay store http://www.largodigital.com/ Just click on Harley Davidson after choosing the Ipod Aux Cable link. Gilbos makes mounts here on the forum.
Another vote for Gilbos brackets. PM him for a price. They come in raw aluminum but chrome up really nice. They also will powder coat nicely, and I'm about to find out how they look iin black anodize. Really nice piece. You can see them on his link here:
