Why not just wear helmets when you travel regardless? 1/2, 3/4, or flip-up/ full face all provide protection and as long as they have a faceshield you will have protection in case of incliment weather.

And for anyone who want to jump in, I do not want to hear any crap about "real bikers" don't wear helmets.
REAL BIKERS DON'T WEAR HELMETS!!

Like said earlier, the states that have helmet laws seem to enforce them rigorously. I drove into Nebraska from South Dakota coming home from Sturgis one year knowing about the requirement but crossed the state line without thinking about it and the nice people in the first three cars that I came upon were waving and pointing to their heads. I awoke from my daze, pulled over and put on the helmet. Later a guy at a gas stop said they really are strict about the helmet law, especially in August when so many out of staters are passing through.

It's pretty easy to strap a helmet on top of a tee bag or stick a half helmet in a saddle bag. Use your HOG atlas for info on non free states.

FWIW, on a long trip I always wore one even when I didn't regularly wear one. They've saved my *** in bad storms more times than I could mention. If it weren't for my HJC Symax on a 2000 mile New England trip a couple of years ago of which we spent 1500 miles riding in the rain I don't believe I'd of made it. I could crack the face shield a bit and actually see where I was going. This goes a long way towards assisting one in avoiding contact with various and sundry objects both big and small, stationary and moving. Just a helpful hint.

Thing was, I was wearing a DOT Approved Helmet but the sticker inside was worn and wasn't real readable.

That cop should have been able to tell by lookin at the helmet. The non DOT are like a 1/4 inch thick vs 2 inch for DOT.

Yep, a little hard to mix them up that's for sure. Like a said, he was having a bad day.
Funny, I haven't had an inspection stickeron my bike since I bought it in 2000. I don't even have a place for a sticker now and I've never been asked about it.

No inspection sticker required in Ga. Like I said earlier, helmet definitley is. I've seen lots of bikers wearing beanies and never seen one, nor heard of one, dinged for it. However, my helmet is DOT and greatly resembles those worn by motor LEOs. If you'd seen the damage done to the helmet (and not my head) that I was wearing when the cage hit me, on that Oct day in 2003, you'd know why I'd still choose to wear it, even if it was optional. On the accident report, the office wrote "rider wearing helmet, but he didn't say anything about it being DOT - like it was."

it has been my experience in extensive travels that states that have helmet laws will enforce the law. You can also receive multiple tickets in the same day. get a couple of helmet bags and strap the bags onto the rack or T-bags.
