HELP!!!103 build HQ or SE
philm is right - the difference is between ok and excellent.
i had a dealership major upgrade once when they had a winter special and basically the labor was "free" and the cost of the upgrade was slightly more than the cost of the parts. it was all i could afford at the time and it was just that - OK. i thought it was good, but it never performed as well as i had expected it to - no major seat of the pants feeling of sitting on a performance bike. i eventually had it redone with head-quarters parts and the difference was night and day - far superior. major increases in performance with the head-quarters package.
that being said up front, i do not want to make you second guess yourself if the trigger has been pulled already. i'm a performance junkie and was not satisfied with the se package. however, unless you want big numbers or the ability to go out and outrun all your buddies on the drag strip, you will be very pleased with the se packages. some of them can be very nice if the mechanic putting it together is performance oriented and you don't just get the standard harley packages. get the squish and the compression right, the right cam for that compression and the way you ride, perhaps get the heads mildly ported while they are off, etc - and you will have a nice bike. there are a lot of different roads to the same destination.
My HQs build total price was very resonable 2100 in parts and 750 in labor--this include some dyno time.
At this time I have 105.8 hp 117.3 lbs torque---I have to take it back to be tuned in 400 miles-probably get couple more hps and handful of more torque--especially with new pipes----------it's been raining here and very lousy riding weather in general.
When I did this build Phil, Dalton and Carl T told me to hold on and ride with a extra pair of undrwear---well I have been practicingburn outs in my cul de sac -- talking about some scary excitement ---I have to learn how to temper the torque so that it does not go completely sideways.
Although I did not intend for it to happen the front tire will come up on occasion I have not had the guts to do a full on whellie yet--the bike will hit 115mph with no problem and plenty of steam left--being the responsible adult that I am that's as fast as I want to go at this time.
After my riding buddies saw the build and the bike run, they all forgot their plans to build SE 103 and went with 113s from HQs (the bastards).
My only problem is the Rinehart Tru Duals--not good for this type of motor--they soon will be on ebay---if anybody wants them pre ebay---make me an offer by PM----
I would also check out the GMR 107 it's about the same price and a couple people have reported good things about the 107 and excellent results from the GMR 103 What ever you get ride the damn thing
AL: PhilM
Why don't ya give Lyn a shout? (LRK0) He has buds w/ SE 103's & wanted something better. Check & see if he feels good about the results.
Honestly, the SE stuff is "OK" & the HQ stuff is "Excellent". It really depends on what ya want.
All kidding & BS aside.... there is a HUGE difference.

Wheelies are not in my future either way I go.The price difference is huge at this point so Im trying not to get caught up in the HQ mainia and make a rational choice. With that being said I do not want buyers remorse,it will drive me insane!!!!
I just Finished a SE 103 Build on my Bike andI amvery Pleased, but a didn't use the the SE 255 Cam I used the SE 211
RKK: Depends on your riding style and performance appetite. A thousand bucks difference is no bargain if the HQ performance is of little interest to you. On the other hand, spending 1800 for a package that doesn't float your boat/make your heart beat a little faster/feel like a differrent motorcycle may beawaste of dollars.
