Default Tires

I'm getting ready to change the stock tires on my 03 flhrci. I'm not sure if I want to put Dunlops back on. Would like any feedback on Avon or Metzlers. Thank-ya kindly.

Metzler is a great tire. Avon is better I think for choppers and crotch rockets. I use the Dunlops because they are a good tire and any Harley dealer will always have one in stock if you need it on the road. Most dealers do not stock metzlers or Avons.

Metzler is the way to go. If I didn't have so few miles on my bike I would be chaning out these sh*tty Dunlops in a heartbeat. I run Metzlers on my sportbikes and they are a great tire. Also Metzler will be a little softer compound so you will get a few less miles then a Dunlop depending on your riding habits.

Avon i have no clue about.

I have used boh. The AVON had issues with cracking between the threads. Avon eventually made the tires good and said it was a design / weight issue. The reccomended increasing the air pressure from that listed on the side wall. I got the new tires, but never mounted them. Traded them with a local wrench. The Metzlers were ok, I just didn't seem to get the mileage out of them. I went back to Dunlop.

Talked to local mechanic about which tires to get cause I am need for the rear once and he said you better off with Dunlops. From his experience and customer complaints about the Metzler tires wearing out too fast and uneven at times. So they end up coming back and changing them for Dunlops. So I will continue using Dunlops.

I've never tried Avons but, I've used both Metzlers and Dunlops. As said above, the Metzlers are a little softer and you get a little better grip. Having said that, the Metzlers lasted half as long and cost more. I just put another set of Dunlops on.

I won't presume too understand why you came down too those 2 tire brands. But I'll challenge you to a test. Go to any cycle shop and locate there dead tires spot. Look at any brand you wish and then grab a DUNLOP Elite and put them side-by-side and focus directly at the SIDE-WALLS. You'll will probably see that the thickness of a DUNLOP to any other brand on the sidewall is approx. double the thickness.
I won't go into the details of why that is important.. suffice it to say.. the heavier the bike the better it is to have thickness vs. performance.

Hope that helps you decide.

Anybody have any experience with the Michelin Commander? I'm not a big fan of the Dunlops that are on my bike now. They seem to wear fine, but traction seems worse with these tires than any of the others that I've owned. Particularly in the wet, they do not inspire confidence at all. I'd rather replace more often and have better traction.
