Default Rusty end pipes

I've got an '08 Anniv Road King and am very pleased with it except for the fact that the ends of the pipes internallyare quite rusty (and were so from new). I intend using a bit of sand paper on them and thenpainting them matt black. Is there some kind of special paint to use? Why don't HD do something about this at the factory?

You night try some 00steelwool. I don't know about painting them. That kinda heat would probably burn it off. Unless you get some motor paint. Are these the stock pipes?

How long have you had the bike?I may be overreacting but I would be at the dealership talking to the manager about part replacements under warranty at their cost.

HD will not replace those for that reason. The rusting is sort of a natural occurance. After a while it will just turn sooty. You could paint them with a high temp corrosion resistance paint and that would solve your problem for a while. Reapplications may be required periodically. Or, you could replace them with a performance pipe or a set of screaming eagle slip onn mufflers which require the use of end caps and that will solve it especially if you choose billet end caps. Expensive way to go if thats all you want.

I used 0000 steel wool and 1500 degree paint on mine. It worked real well. If you are going to do this make sure you clean it up well and get all that rust out. It will probably be pitted from the rust and rust will be far up the pipe. You only have to paint far enough for ppl to see from the back. Dry the inside of the pipe out after you wash the bike if you wash it a lot. My paint job held up pretty well but I ended up with Rush mufflers from Fuelmoto.

Some people will run to the dealer for anything. Just get the rust out and use some BBQ Pit spray paint. That will last a long time. I have done that for years. I do it about once a year on my truck. Bike has not needed it yet.

Rust in the muffler tip seems like a logical question to ask on this forum especially when its a new 08.You never learn unless you ask these questions,so I don't think that is a poser question and who cares if he is a poser.

What's it to you if somebody buys a bike and doesn't ride it? Why should that bother you? Worry about yourself.

To the original poster: I had that problem too. I just kept wiping it out of the end of the pipe. Eventually, you won't notice it. I didn't worry too much about it because I had intentions of putting aftermarket pipes on eventually.
