Had a stock 15" on the bike when I first got it. It was great out on the highway in terms of deflecting wind, but it was a pain to look thru in the rain and at night when it was bug splattered. I could see over it, but it definitly distorted my vision once it was dirty or wet.
Went to a 12" and it was better, but still would be difficult to use once covered in road grime and riding at night. Went with a 6" and it works perfect for me. The 6" is still tall enough to buffet the wind on the Highway and I can still tuck in behind it and pass Dumptrucks full of gravle and get protection...
I have three windshields, and I use the tallest (15") during the cold months. It works well for that purpose, and I also recommend Clearview as a vendor. BTW, during the summer, unless I'm riding long distances, I use a black 6" windshield.
