Default Replacing Derby Cover

Got a little Christmas bling and went out to put the new derby cover on and seen that one of the torx screws is hidden behind the passenger floor board. I left my manual at my daughter's house as I had it in the Jeep and took it in to look up something and....well anyway I don't have it with me as she live 3 hrs away. My question after all this is....How do I remove the floor board to get to the screw on derby cover? Please be kind and tell me the instructions...slow...as I am by no means a wrench. I have an 07 and I think I only see one bolt that can be holding on the floor board and it like everything else on the 07's looks like it needs a torx wrench. Is that the only bolt? Do I need to remove the whole thing or will it swing out of the way once I loosen the bolt. If there is another way please let me know.

You pretty much have it pinned. That one bolt will remove the board and the mount for access to the torx fastner on the derby cover, take it right off out of the way. The derby bolts are #27 NOT #25 as some use ,so use the right torx wrench or you will strip it.

Try not to disturb the "O" ring that is sitting in the groove in the primary cover. They grow when you remove them and difficult to fit in again. If you do loose it some dabs of grease will hold it in place to reinstall the cover.

I am at work and not looking at my bike, but if memory serves me correctly, you do have to remove that passenger footboard. I do only remember one bolt there. I believe those torx bolts are T27, so beware. After you tighten your chrome torx screws, do yourself a favor and get some clear fingernail polish to coat the inside of those torx bolts. Rust will not be an issue after that. Hope this helps.

The screws on the derby cover are T27 as I had removed a couple before I ran into trouble with the floor board. What about torx bolt for the floor board. What size does it take?

Take one of the torx bolts down to Ace Hardware, and get replacement chrome allen head bolts and washers. Will save a lot of pain later if the torx head strips. also makes it much easier to remove the cover to change the oil in the primary.

I am not sure exactly what size the floorboard bolt is but I do know that if you have a late model cage brake caliper socket (large allen) it fits perfectly. Same size as the allen head bolt that holds the air cleaner cover on as well.
Hope it helps

I need to replace the air cleaner cover too. So you're saying that it is an allen and not a torx? Why does Harley do this??????

Sparky The allen bolt size for the floor board is a 5/16. Go to a true value hardware and buy yourself a set of allen sockets that fit a 3/8 inch drive wrachet. I think a set is only about $10 They sell Kobalt tools and they have a lifetime warntey. also get yourself a set of torq sockets and make sure it has a t27 in it.

I believe, and I have been wrong before, but the allen head bolt for the AC and for the rear board removal is an 8mm. Just tried it and it fit nice and tight.

Be sure to look at your new cover on the back side before you install it and make sure that it has the same groove for the oring. If not you will need to buy the gasket to replace the oring. I put a new cover on my UC and that's what I had to do. The custom derby that I installed did not have the groove- might save you some grief!
