I stopped in at HD service dept. where I have my warrenty work done and I got an eye opener. While I was there they had 3 new bikes torn down for crank run out. One of them had less than 8 yes 8 miles on it. It never made the 10 mile shake down ride, when they took it in the shop and disassembled it. They found crand run out .0035 and .0045 on it. They were talking of going to 100% checking of crank runout before putting the bike on the floor!! It was a consensus with the mechanics that HD quality on cranks was so bad, that the only way to keep happy customers was to inspect the bikes before sales get them. Is this a local thing or is there other people having the same problem???
Boy, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about my bike on order.
Btw..........I bought an 1980 AMF Sturgis new and never had any problem with that bike. Well atleast until I put the 100 shot of nitrous on it...........Ka-Booooooom[sm=laughingsmilie.gif]

That's pretty disturbing news. On the bright side of things...you've got yourself a darn good local dealer.

I think you have one to many zeros in your spec, the way you have it written is 3 and a half thousandths and 4 and a half thosandths which meets harleys specs of .012 (twelve thousandths)crank runout, otherwise Harley would not fix it.
Are you saying the spec. for the crank pin mis-alignment/ runout of main bearing journels is .012 or 12 thousands??I don't know about a bike but,Your car would not make the next oilchange with that kind of runout. The spec. on the crank bearing bores alignmentis a lot less than .001. Isn't it??
Yes, that is correct, the moco spec used to be like.005 then .010 and the last I heard was .012, That is why so many people cannot use gear drive or it makes so much racket, I would sure think you would be able to feel .012 riding on the bike. My bike has.005 and cannot feel it but it makes me a little nervous, and I did not go with the gear drive. The cranks are a 2 piece crank which is joined together by a pin in betwween the 2, if the cranks move (scissors) it creates runout, 2002 and older the bikes used timken bearings and they seemed to hold up alot better. Todd
I asked about the timken bearings and they told me whenever they do a 113 build they go to the timken upgrade and TIG the wheels and pin together after doing an alignment check. They told me they've never had one come back with any problems related to that. Maybe that is why they had 27 customers drop off their bikes yesterday for service.I would have left mine, but there was no place to park it. The dealership is Mann's HD in Columbus,IN. If anyone is in the area and needs service.
