I can imagine! I tried something similar one time with the bike on the lift and ended up needing a little "help". Let's just saybikes and lifts work best when the bike is balanced on the lift and not rear wheel low (on the ground), front wheel high. Well, you get the picture. Luckily two of my grown sons were here to help me remove the lift without dropping the bike. Now, once my bike is on the lift, I don't do ANYTHING to make it want to do something else! LOL.

What kind of money do you have in doing the cam change? My 02 has about 70,000 on it. I replaced the tenisoners at about 35,000 so it is time again. Just not sure if I should just replace them again or go with the gear set change. Not sure how much longer I will keep the bike. What to do, what to do.

You can get a set of Andrews 26g's that include the 4 gear set and the installation kit (bearings, gasket) for just under $500 from American Classic Motors on their ebay store. Then you can get a set of SE adjustable pushrods so you don't have to remove your tank for $112 from a 20% dealer like Zanottis or Chicago HD. I would also change out the lifters in your case. If you go with the HD "B" lifters you would be looking at $100 for all four. You can get a good set of Gatermans off ebay that are identical for $48. Then it's just a matter of a tool rental or whatever you plan to do there. Then of course you would have to look at a rejet of remap

Okay, I got her fired up this afternoon. Phil was right, the lifters make some noise before they get some oil. Only ran the bike for a couple of minutes and she'd quieted down quite a bit. Oil pressure is fine, so alignment must be okay. I do notice a little whirring noise from the gears, but I kind of like it -- tells me I have no more plastic in the cam chest!

I do have one more question for Phil or Dawg or anyone else who knows -- I only ran the bike for a couple of minutes, but was still getting a little tapping. Can't ride today 'cause we got snow last night, so do you think I'm still getting some lifter noise that will go away with a little more run time?I just want to be sure I don't have a valve adjustment problem. As hard as it was getting to the adjustable pushrod nuts, I wasn't able to get a dead nuts on measurement, but the instructions said three to four turns and as best I could tell I was within that range.

How will I know if I have a valve adjustment problem?

Sorry for the double post, but forgot to include the pic of my inner tensioner. Pretty impressive -- I was just about past running on borrowed time -- notice the crack. Also attached is pic of the outer tensioner that I could easily see.

The noise could be gear fit is a little off, contact between pushrods and pushrod covers, or not correctly adjusted pushrods.

If it's lifters, how long before they would quiet down? Otherwise, what's the best way to troubleshoot it if the noise continues? Don't think it's gear fit based on what I measured and what Andrews tech support told me.

I'd wait to see after you've ridden it. If noise continues I'd start at the pushrod adjustments. BTW, add the 26's to your signature

Thanks, fellas, just needed to hear that. Wish I could have ridden today.

And Dawg, thanks for pointing out the 26G's in the sig. I'll get right on it!
