Yeah, Phil, that's sort of kind of what I did the first time, and it did work, but sure took me longer than 10 seconds per tube. Guess that's where experience comes into play. When I can do it in 10 seconds, you can call me YODA!

Weather finally warmed up today and I took the bike outfor her maiden ride with the new cams and lifters. After about two minutes of riding the lifters quieted down completely, and I've only got a very slight whirring sound of the gears. With the radio onyou don't hear a thing, and with it off it's very slight -- sort of like a small turbo! LOL. She pulls a little better and runs like a bat of out hell. Of course, I installed a new PCIII in her at the same time, so don't know how much is attributed to the new cams and how much for my third PCIII. Anyway no popping, no lifter noise, no diesel noise, nothing -- just one outstanding ride, and no plastic in the cam chest. Man, I'm one happy dog! LOL

What's next -- maybe cruise from the good folks at Cruisemount.

Thanks again for all who helped with this project!

Jim, glad to see you got her going...I had the same tapping as you were talking about and had to readjust my one push rod.... But I bought the push rod covers when I bought the push rods and it is really quite easy to adjust them with the new covers....And a little tip to put the pushrod covers back on just put a small flat screw driver between the spring down and the clip insert and pry up it will go back together like it was made for it...Ha Jer

Jer, I don't know what it is about your posts but I have a REAL HARD TIME FOCUSING ON WHAT YER SAYING! LOL. May have something to do with your avatar!

Thanks for the tip on the spring clips, bro. Got to be a better way than what I did.

When I did my upgrade last year I had a little noise, switch to Mobil 1 or Amsoil made a great difference. Gear drives just make more noise and take some getting use to.

Just finished my 95" upgrade this month, if you like what the 26g did then add the cubic inches and feel what a harley should feel like from the factory.

Well Taterdog,
I will have to say my cam install has not gone as smooth as yours. I ordered the complete kits from American Classic Motors, which included the new inner and outer cam bearings, all 4 S&S gears and the 26G Andrews cams. Let me start by saying that this post is Not intended to slam American Classic. I know they are just parts in from the manufacture and parts out to the customer.

I started by removing and installing the new inner cambearings. Took your advise and just rented the tools. I ended up with the Jim’s tools and they worked great, took about 20 minutes to do the entire job.

Next I went to put the gears and the outer bearings on the cams. Wanted to try the freezer/oven method you used. Tapped the half moon keys into the cams and put them both in the freezer. Pre heated the ol’ over to 325 and put the front and read inner gears in for 35 minutes. Got all setup with a little scrap block of wood on the counter top (so’s not to **** the wife off) and a little hammer and deepwell 1 1/2 socket, just in case I had to tap the gear on. Ready to go now. Pulled the front cam out of the freezer and the front gear out of the oven and with just a little firm push they went right together. Perfect!!!! Now I grabbed the rear cam out of the freezer and went to put the rear gear on and it just fell right on without even pushing. I thought to myself, now that was just to easy, so I started looking at the rear cam and gear and notice right away something was way wrong. The gear was touching the journal on the cam on one side and there was a Big gap on the other side. The only thing holding the gear on the cam was the fact that the key was half in the gears key slot and half out. Gear was sitting oval on the cam. Could not believe what I was looking at. Went back out to the garage and got my gear pullers out. With one turn, the gear popped right back off the rear cam. I took my dial indicators out and measured the cam and then measured the bore in the gear. The gears bore was .068 thousands larger (WTF). I measured the front cam where the gear rides and it was the same as the rear cam. I checked the part number stamped on the rear gear and the part number on the label of the rear gear box and the part number in the Andrews instructions, it was the right part number, but no way was this the right gear for that cam. Also checked the quality control label stuck inside the rear gear box and sure enough it was inspected on a Friday.[:@]

Ended up calling American Classic and shipping the cams and all 4 S&S gears back and now waiting for them to inspect the parts and the shipment back to me.. I have the new Feuling oil pump installed, new Feuling tappets soaking in oil, PCIII installed, New D&D FatCat ready to go. But can’t go any further until I get some cams. What a Bummer…..

Anyone else ordering the complete kit of gears and cams, you might just want to check the cams and the gears bores before you start. Hopefully mine was the only miss stamped gear they cranked out that day.

Dang, Tim, sorry to hear about the problems you are having. I've never read of anyone having that problem, but sounds like someone screwed up for sure. I dry fit my parts before beginning just to be sure I knew what I was going to do when things were hot/cold, and both gear bores could not be hand pushed onto the cams, so I was pretty sure they would be okay. Sounds like one of your gears might have fit without even being heated up! One bright side is that you've now been through the oven/freezer method and know how it works, so next go round should be piece of cake for you. And at least you've got your inner bearings replaced. Same experience I had, probably the easiest part of the entire job. IF AMC doesn't make things right for you by sending a new kit, I bet you could contact S&S directly and get the right size gear (or Andrews if it's the cam that's off). I've heard they both have pretty good customer service, especially for things like this. Keep us posted on how this turns out for you. Maybe second time will be a charm!

Thanks Taterdog, It has to be the reargear because when I measured the cams where the gear rides both were the same. They were the S&S gears, but all came in the Andrews boxes from ACM. So if I don;t get them back soon from ACM, next call will be to Andrews. Heading out to the garage to dry fit the D&D Fatcat and stare at the big hole on the right side of my bike.

You probably would have had much faster response and replacement parts by calling Andrews direct to find out where the problem was. They most likely would have cross shipped some new cams asap if that was their problem! AMC will most likely do this as well which may burn up 2 or 3 weeks. They may also just swap you but honestly, AMC is pretty good when it comes to selling and pricing but they mainly make you deal with the manufacturer instead of them.

Hope all goes well. Gook Luck.
