I went from a Dyna to an Ultra, absolutely no problems, but then I never look at my front wheel or front fender anyway. Keep your focus ahead where it supose to be and you won't have any problems. On the plus side having the added protection and coverage over the hands makes me wonder why I didn't move up sooner. From my prespective there is absolutely no down-side to the fairing.

I went from a Heritage to an Ultra about two years ago, super move, wish I had done it before buying the Heritage but at the time I also was unsure if I'd like the fairing. My first all day ride made a believer out of me, rained some that day, I stayed pretty dry and at the end of the day I still had energy to burn from not having to fight the wind.
It is not that much to get used to with the fairing, just need to adjust your distance aheada little better because of the fairing blocking the close up view you are used to, the wind can play with the front end some on a really windy day (wind gust), matter of a fact if it's that windy best not to ride anyway.
Really you Will enjoy the extra room for things like a radio, CD player, etc, if you want those, all the gauges right there in front of you, everything at your finger tips, I don't know what come with the SG, but my Ultra has it all.
Go for it, you will not regret it except once you ride an Ultra you will wish you had went that route. Why buy ab SG then spend all that money making it into an Ultra, might as well go ahead and start enjoying it right off the bat with the ultra.
Just joking around, I know you will love the SG and the fairing, hope you have fun and ride safe.

I went from an EVO Softail Custom to TC Fatboy to SG. I still have the Fatboy (with no windscreen ever). The only regret with the SG is that the ride is so nice that I never ride the FB unless its just down the road a piece. It will spoli you.

Went from Heritage to Ultra and love it.
As soon as you take a ride on some twisties you'll know why you went to the touring frame.
The fairing is a very minimalissue in getting used to.

I went from 99 Heritage to 07 SG. Fairing was not really an issue, other than not being able to see front tire.
I find the SG handles better than Heritage anyway.

Prior to the EG, I had never had anything other than very small wind screens. When I sat on the EG on the showroom floor I was concerned with getting used to that HUGE batwing. First test ride and it was all over. I love it. Not a problem to transition into at all.

After owning the EG forseveral months I went to the dealer with a buddy for "test ride day". I jumped on a Softail with no windshield and took a 20 mile loop on the interstate. I came back looking like Popeye fromsqueezing the grips and leaning into the wind. I still dig bobbers and tight springers, but for laying down any serious mileage, I'll take my EG any day.

I switched from a RK to the Ultra and my major concern at first was lower visibility, air flow in the face, extra weight etc. But after riding with the fairing, I must say it is a pleasure.

Thanks for all the input. I'm trying to rent one first before making the plunge.
