The first time it happened to me (35 degrees, I-80, Iowa/IL border), I fixed it with a zip tie and got home. I called the dealership the next day to see if they had one in stock, walked in and traded them over the counter. There was no problem at all. Then I ordered an upgraded one with the heim joints.
I have purchased two new motorcycles since then, and the FIRST upgrade I do is to change the linkage.
I picked up one of these off ebay last month, fits in with the flame deal on my bike. Looks like the Harley one exactly minus the HD logo missing in the circle. For $45 shipped it is a deal. There are other styles on the bay if you do a search.
When I bought my SG I quickly changed the shifter out to heim joints, which are much more durable than the ball-and-socket joints HD installs on new bikes. These stock joints will fail sooner or later. The heim joints can be purchased on Ebay for about $10 each, and a complete chrome custom shifter with heim joints are available for $40-60, like the one 990rtracer has installed on his bike. Do a search on "Harley shifter" and you'll get dozens of hits.
Mine went last year at around 15k miles. Luckily I found mine broken when I was getting ready to leave for work so I wasn't out on the road. I didn't even bother with the dealer since I knew I'd hear the same crap. I just bought a new one with the heim joint and was done with it.
Went to the dealer today. They replaced the rod and both ends. I am set for Daytona now. I will look on ebay for a better rod. Stealer also agreed to turn my front rotors around to stop the squealing brakes. They also found a couple of smalloil leaks. My warranty runs out Mar 31 so better get everything fixed on their dime. Thanks for the advice and links.
