Hey guys, I'm in the middle of a winter project, Im currently putting a set of Carlini 1 1/4" Handlebars on the bike and I had to get a set of longer throttle cable for my 2002 RKC. I had to get +2 throttle/idle cables. I got a new set of Stainless Braided cables from harley and after installing them today along with a new Chrome Master, and Chrome switch housings that my throttle cables just dont feel right. They seem to move fairly easily but the throttle WILL NOT RETURN after cranking it wide open, It just sticks, The throttle takes a little work to open but I have to manually return the throttle to the closed position.
I Currently have the Headlight Nacelle off the bike and If i hold the cables in the position that they would be in if it were on they stick, If I hold them out in a position where there is very minimal binding of the cables. The throttle returns on its own but still not smoothly and quickly.
WHAT GIVES!! I followed my service manual and I just dont know where I went wrong.
make sure you didn't slide your switch housing too far up onto the bar causing the end of the bar to rub the end of the throttle on the inside. I did it once.
did you lube them? even if they are new you may need a little cable lube.
When I put on new hand controls and housings I had the same problem. I lubed, adjusted took a pat put together moved the grip rubber back. I have no idea which one it was because all of the sudden they just worked right.
I dont really think it could have been any of those problems, I have not yet lubed the cables. But if I hold the cables just right they work just fine, BUT, If I put the nacelle back in place and route the cables like the factory ones, They bind up like crazy, Like its amost even hard to turn the throttle.
I have adjusted the cables just like the service manual said to and things are not getting any better, I just cant imagine that lubing the cables would actually help that much, Its just that they bind so bad that I just cant see lube helping.
They are HD cables too! Not cheap aftermarket ones, They should work just fine but hey maybe I'm overlooking something.
I'll try lubing em up. I'll try anything at this point.
OK, its now 12:13am here in Indiana, and my throttle cables are now working smooth as ever!!
All i had to do is get creative with a can of Teflon lube and an air hose!! I lubed the cables and now they are working great!
I never would have thought that lube would help that much, since they were new cables i thought that they might have already had some type of lubricant on them.
