Anyone had any experience with HD's helmet locks and if so where did you mount them? Every summer my wife and I go on a reasonbly long road trip and dont have room to lock them up in tour case or side saddles. I've never been ripped off but there is always the 1st time in a awkward situation. Also reading about the helmet on Ebay that was swiped got me thinking more about it.
I put mine on the left (port side) engine guard as high on the vertical bar as possible. It can hold two helmets thru the D-rings with no problem and dangles down without hitting the bike.
The only thing I did not like about the helmet locks were the one-way screws. You had best make sure that you are placing the lock EXACTLY where you want it to go. You do not have a second chance at it.
you can change out the screws for non tamperproof ones for fitting purposes, then replace them one at a time when you are sure they are where you want them. Wait a week before doing the final install I moved mine a few times.
I wear full faced helmets most of the time, and I use the helmet locks as a anchoring point for cables.
I mounted mine on the top of the engine guards, but they aren't particularly convenient and our full-face helmets are a bit big for that location. Neggy, I like your approach and I think I'll look into a similar approach.
After reading this post earlier, I looked on ebay. I want a pair (one for my bike, one for wife's)
I see where some of the HD dealers have them listed for $24.95 + shpg) when retail is $18.95
How funny !!! Gee . . . I'll take four at that price! Ca'mon, I might have been born in the
morning, but it wasn't THIS morning. Do they just think we're stupid?
I mounted mine on the saddle bag guard, but to be honestI rarely use it. Im more concerned about some knothead punk messing with it or taking it than another biker. Most bikers know what the inside of a helmet goes through and wouldnt be caught dead in another's helmet. Park around bikes when ever you can.
On the RK, I did the same -- left engine guard on the top rail with lock toward your leg. I'm searching for a place on my new Ultra Classic, likely going to be the vertical part of the left saddle bag guard. Or, now that I see the "cable method" from Neggy I can explore that option and find a more discreet place for the helmet lock.
