Default RE: EXHAUST SQUEAK ????

I had a squeak on my 2000 UC and it was the rear bracket on the right side. The muffler would slide all the way one direction (I forget whether it was forward or back) and squeak against the end of the slide of the muffler. I could loosenthe clamp up by the pipe, slide it to the middle, retighten the clamp, and I wasgood for a couple rides and then it would shift back. After multiple tries, I finally solved it by moving the clamp as for forward on the muffler as I could, and tightened it while the pipes werehot afterrunning for a while. Even though I thought I was going to overtighten the clamp, it seemed to be able to handle it. It has not moved since.

Lightbulb $4.00 / 15 minute solution

For $4.00 you can buy a set of those bushings from H-D (it's an item they all have on hand) and even the most inept idiot with a 1/2" socket can swap those out in 15 minutes, solving the problem. As an inept idiot (who once stripped his oil pan drain screw because he didn't understand how a torque wrench worked) I can vouch for this fact.

Remove saddle bags (if applicable) to access the hangers. Tie the rear of the pipe up to your signal / plate mounts or put something underneath them so that they are not "freeballing" once you remove the hanger. Using a 1/2" socket, remove the bolts. Slide the chrome plate out of the bushing. Take a screwdriver and push down on the front top of the bushing while pushing it through. Clean off the gunk, slide in the new bushing from the front, plate back in, tighten bolts. Done and Done. QUIET. Sweet relief....

I lived with this problem for YEARS before I found out how easy it is to get rid of it. Let the world know - it's spring again and my birds have stopped chirping. Halla-freakin-luya !

if the mufflers are loose in the rubber bushing can that cause vibration in the floor boards?

Default Thanks for the tips

During our trip to Laughlin this year, my 2000 Road King started squeaking / squealing (metal on metal chirp, my wife described it) on the right hand side. I have Rinehart true duals. I checked the rubber bushings at the saddlebag mounts, and they looked fine. The noise sounded like it was coming from underneath me by my right foot.

I found that the problem was a broken P-clamp on the right header pipe, which connects to the bracket at the transmission. I didn't spot it until I loosened the nut and the broken tab shifted around. The top tab had evidently broken off previously, and the bottom tab wast now sheared off. I called Rinehart to ask about ordering a new clamp, and they shipped me out a replacement at no charge. Thanks Rinehart! Here are a couple of pics of what I found.

I "thought" I had that problem, but I still had it after I changed them. Then I realized it all started right around the time I got a new rear tire installed.

When I checked the belt tension it was way to tight.. got it right and no more squeeking.
