Bought mine in Jan, 07. Sent back to Garmin in Dec. Had several problems with touchscreen selecting wrong area, mp3 player locking up. All minor stuff. They sent me what I think is a refurb'ed unit. For the most part, it's worked OK. Still has an ocassional mp3 problem. They give a 60 day warranty on repairs and that's just about run out, so now I guess if it fails, it's mine. I'd buy it again, though.
Bought mine a year ago, use it on the bike and in our cars - no problems thus far. It's real easy to move from vehicle to vehicle. I'm not a fan of the security screws, I don't think they'd stop someone from taking the unit (they just have to loosen the ball mount). I'm actually thinking about removing the security screw, since I take the unit off each time I park.
Mine is close to a year old & has never missed a beat. One of my riding buddies had one die in the first week or two, but the replacment has been fine.
That would be me.......when it failed, I called Garmin andthey sent a replacement unitto me overnight as I was going on a trip in two days. My credit card was charged for a new unit (full price from Garmin), then credited for that charge when my dead unit was received by them. I have had no problems with this unit since......about 10 months. I would buy one again in a New York minute.
I'm on my second 550 unit now. I had my first unit for 7 months and then it was just dead one day. Had to spend $35 to send it back(insured) and took about 2 weeks to get another unit. We'll see how this one works out.
That's the guy I was going to buy the five screws from.
If I loose one or someone needs one, I will have spares. If I'm going to order them, I will most likely get a five pack. I could always sell the others.
I'm suprised someone locally hasn't made these screws.
I've had mine for about 9 months now. It locked up on me twice. I removed the battery, re-installed it and everything was fine. It hasn't done that since probably the first month. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.
I bought 2 of the screw from the guy on zumo forum. they work slick, alot easier to remove the zumo from the base, than the special screw driver was, that was a real pain in the a$$ ! placed my order for the screws took approx. 7days to receive them, not bad concidering they are coming from the netherlands, one note ....... my zumo mount had a very small o-ring on the original screw to keep it from falling out of the hole, I was able to reinstall it on the new thumb screw with just a tiny flat blade screw driver,by holding it in place while i removed the original screw and twisted in the new one, alot of people never realized there was a o-ring holding the original screw in the hole and lost them, maybe not such a big deal but i didnt want to have to always be looking to make sure the screw was still there, they are very small.
