I just checked the owners manual and I couldn't find anything about the engine light comming on and it being not a problem and ok to ride. Talk to the service manager. That answer from the mechanic isn't good enough.
Turtle, was the check engine lightcoming on before the dealer did the 15K service? If not, then I"d be highly suspicious that something happened during the 15K service to cause the problem. Knocked a wire loose or damaged a sensor or something.Hard tobelievethat it'sjusta coincidence that it never happenedduring 15K miles of riding, but oncethe bike underwent the 15Kservice, the CEL comes on.
Here in the uk,took my bike for its 5000 service, riding home the engine light came on,and after arriving home the bike reeked of petrol--- nothing found by me, and the dealer said-its just a glitch sir, no probs since!
I took my 2005 Heritage to a dealer for a 20,000K service two days before I was supposed to leave on a weekend trip with my wife. I trailered the bike home, unloaded it and when I fired it up to put it in the garage, the engine light was on. Ran fine, but the light was on.
I called the dealer and they said if I brought it right back, they would get it in and have me ready for my trip. I rode the bike 90 mph most of the way back to the dealer (60 miles). They had it back in the shop about 3 minutes and told me that a plug wire had broken and it was only firing on one cylinder. They replaced the wire and the light went off and I was good to go. They also said there was no charge because it was so minor and I had just had it there for the 20,000k service.
I may not be a mechanical genius, but I am sureI could tell if the bike was only running on one cylinder........ and when I pushed it just as hard on the way home it didn't run 180 mph....
My guess was they found something silly that they did during the 20,000k service and were ashamed to admit it, but at least they took care of it on the spot for no charge and I did get to take the trip I had planned.
No the light wasn't coming on before the service, and it didn't come on after the service on the way home. It was two days later after running close to 40 miles, after I left the dealership that it did. Hope that helps.
H_ll Yeah i would be mad one the light comes on for a reason. It might be just a loose wire contact but you took it back in and sounds like a 3 min. check was not good enough. I hope you get it fixed it would bug the H_ll out of me just my 2 cents.
I had the same problem on my 03 Road Glide while travelling in Maine. The dealer tried a lot of things, even called HD. It turned out to be a plug wire that was very intermitant. They couldn't find it because it only happen once in a while. I replaced both plug wires and the problem dissapeared. If the wires hadn't fixed the problem, the coil would have been next.
