First service finally...now what?
In the early days of synthetics (70's -89's) With the maching standards, and the metals
in use back then, synthetics were considered too slippery and not enough friction to get
good ring seating. Plus they alledgedly caused a break down in the rubber seals in an
engine and would cause them to leak if you went back to dino oil.
This is explained in the links i gave above.
do yourself a favor and go read them and any other links that you may find.
Become informed.
One advantage synthetics have over dino oil is each and every batch can be engineered
exactly the same as the last batch. dino you can't. And because of this they can engineer
in better high heat stability so the molecules don't break down as easily, thus providing
a better quality lubrication.
I always break 'em in with regular HD oil and change it at 1000, 3000, and go to synthetic somewhere around 5 or 6 k. I always change the filter and gaskets too. Once I have synthetic in it I usually go 4-5k between changes. Best o'luck !
I am just **** about scheduled maintenance...and I do it all myself, so I know its done correctly.
On my new Street Glide....since its brand new I changed the oil/filter (regular old petroleum based) at 300 miles, and I may change them again before I hit the 1K mark.

You say your **** about scheduled maint, well the first schedule is 1000 miles not 300. You got waaaaay to much time if your changin oil at 300 miles, get on the thing and ride it.
Dude seriously 300 miles? Thats like 2 tanks of gas! I would of had to change it out of the side of the road on my first ride it I did that.

The big hint was he said the above.
