In the early days of synthetics (70's -89's) With the maching standards, and the metals
in use back then, synthetics were considered too slippery and not enough friction to get
good ring seating. Plus they alledgedly caused a break down in the rubber seals in an
engine and would cause them to leak if you went back to dino oil.
This is explained in the links i gave above.
do yourself a favor and go read them and any other links that you may find.
Become informed.
One advantage synthetics have over dino oil is each and every batch can be engineered
exactly the same as the last batch. dino you can't. And because of this they can engineer
in better high heat stability so the molecules don't break down as easily, thus providing
a better quality lubrication.

I always break 'em in with regular HD oil and change it at 1000, 3000, and go to synthetic somewhere around 5 or 6 k. I always change the filter and gaskets too. Once I have synthetic in it I usually go 4-5k between changes. Best o'luck !
What is the purpose (benefit) of breaking in with dino fuel and waiting to switch to synthetic at 5 or 6k? The CVOs have synthetic out the showroom door.

A lot of the riding I do with my Softail is short trips, bar hopping.....like 10 miles here....5 miles there. That sort of crap is hard on the oil, so I like to keep it fresh. To top it off I even use Red-Line fully synthetic engine oil (I also use Red-Line Heavy Shock Proof in the trans, and Red-Line MTL in the primary). On my new Street Glide....since its brand new I changed the oil/filter (regular old petroleum based) at 300 miles, and I may change them again before I hit the 1K mark.
I am just **** about scheduled maintenance...and I do it all myself, so I know its done correctly.

Dude seriously 300 miles? Thats like 2 tanks of gas! I would of had to change it out of the side of the road on my first ride it I did that.

You say your **** about scheduled maint, well the first schedule is 1000 miles not 300. You got waaaaay to much time if your changin oil at 300 miles, get on the thing and ride it.

Hey choochoo: Lots of Formula One auto racing teams use Mobil 1 and you will not find a Mobil decal on their cars. I know an engineer for GM who researches oils and he says that Castrol Syntec is identical to Mobil 1.They both have extremely good high pressure packages. That is, they are very good at protecting the camshaft lobe to lifter interface, the highest-pressure situation in the engine. I went to Mobil 1 V Twin 20W-50 at 1,000 miles, along with the HD 5 micron filter. I am going to change it every 4,000-5,000 miles. The synthetic oil plus the low-micron filter are as good as it gets right now.

Too many toys.....too little time! Besides.....I bought the SG in October.....and I aint down with all the "I'm a big bad tough guy biker" who rides all winter. I been there done that.....I road through my share of winters, and I aint got to do it any more. There will be time enough to ride the hell out of both my HD's come Spring.....and I will remember to put a few hundred miles on the SG just for you!
