.Just thought I would join in the debate and cheer you all up a bit. I live in the UK and am used to high fuel prices. I already drive an economical car with a 2 litre VW turbo diesel engine, last week it cost me (at the current exchange rate of $1.98 to the £1.00) $130.68 to fill my car, a medium sized hatchback, worse still it cost me $43.56 to fill my RK.

Stop laughing at the back there, it's true.

This doesn't pay for free healthcare, (that's a myth,we ALL pay National Insurance for that),or anything else,it's just a tax, our government won't be happy 'til were all walking around in Utopia, they hate drivers and riders alike. High cetane ULS diesel(Ultra Low Sulphur)is just about $10 a gallon here with unleaded petrol(gas) slightly lower.
Granted, Imperial gallons are slightly larger than US gallons but it still hurts.
***** to 'em.

See, I knew you'd laugh

Hey Grump, I feel for you. At least you have more reason to bitch at your government for levying those monumental gas (petrol to you ) taxes.

Of course over here they are compounding the problem by subsidizing the use of a bunch of our food to make ethanolcausing the price of food to be pushed up along with gas. But hey, the granola group in their Birkenstocks can pull up to the gas pump in their energy efficient Prius and feel all warm and fuzzy because they think they helped save the world by reducing their consumption of hydrocarbons. Just goes to show intelligent people aren't necessarily smart.

You know when I started this thread It was to vent my frustration at the ridiculous prices we're paying for fuel. I see now that some have it worst than we do and I feel fortunate to live here in the U.S. There was a lot of post that were real eye openers for me, thingthat I never thought of before and they actually made me realized how closed minded I am.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still pi$$ed off at what we're paying for fuel, but at least I understand now why it's happening. Thanks to all who have posted and shared their comments and opinions, after all this is still a free country we live in and we still have the right to freely express ourselves. Thanks and never back down from your beliefs... "D"

So what causes high energy prices?
[ul][*]On the demand side, China and a number of other emerging markets have increased their demand at a substantially higher rate than the 2% increase worldwide. The biggest consumer (the US) exhibits little desire to reduce it's demand.[*]On the supply side, most of the world's producing fields are producing at close to maximum capacity. Saudi production is getting closer to it's current maximum. Many of the major fields in the world are declining. Most of the oil reserves in the world are either in politically unstable countries or owned by corruptgovernments. Remember, oil fields don't produce forever, they decline. I saw somewhere that the world has to find new reservesequivalent to reserves to all of the Gulf of Mexico every five years just to stay even.[/ul]

So, over the short-term, higher prices will eventually force all of us (ie: everyone in the world) to change our energyconsumption habits and consume less and energy prices will moderate. Over the long-term, energy prices will eventually get high enough to stimulate new energy sources - but it won't happen quickly.

By the way, nobody is entitled to cheap energy.
Than the solution is to eliminatethe other countries causing the new demandso the cost of trucking doesnt drive up the cost of Coors light!

The deal with the price of oil has nothing to do with tree huggers or, to a certain extent, supply and demand. Oil is priced in US dollars and the value of our dollars is in the ******* due to our never ending demand for debt. The US is over 9 TRILLION dollars in debt and it is getting worse every day. Who do you think is buying all that debt? And when interest rates are also headed back to the *******, no one really wants to buy it. Point is, if you want to get the price of oil down, learn how the economy works and then you will see the price of oil has everything to do you each and every one of us.

It's NOT the tree-huggers, it's NOT Bush-Chaney, it's NOT the middle east, it NOT EXXON (they are just sitting back and enjoying the huge profits) ....

WE are friggin doing this to OURSELVES!

It is our own WHOLESALERS that are bidding up the price because of their interest in profit...

ya have to love the fools that feel it necessary to let us know how much fuel is in Europe, and what a good deal we are grtting here in the USofA.

Who cares. we don't live in Europe! We have plenty of oil in our own back yard. Unfortunately, the left wing environmentalists don't want us to touch it. Kinda like Nuke power, good for everybody, but THEY don't want it onaconnathere could be an accident.

Hell, these are the same nuts that think we should just cut and run.Obviously, 9/11 had no affect on them....
Looked at your food prices lately?

We will starve and and these fools will continue to praise fuelmade from corn.

There is enough oil in Alaska and Montana to keep us going for a hundred years. After that, nobody I know will still be around!
Does anybody truly believe that Hilary's friend Chavez won't try to get us before then?

I say, pump it hard at home, when we run out, take the stuff from Hugo. Better yet, take his stuff now, and save ours for a rainy day..

Sorry, I needed to vent

Any Canadians in the crowd we were just up there and they had gas signs that read 2.98 but it was per liter not gallon there are 2.2 liters to a gallon so thats almost 7.00 per gallon now offset that by the dollar of 1.20 and were looking at 5.83 a gallon i'd rather be living here in the good old U.S.A. My Uncle works as an engineer for Texaco Oil and I was talking to him candidly one afternoon and I asked him whats with the foreign oil and he said let me educate you on the term.... As far as foreign oil its only foreign because it's in the other country but we own the oil and the wells but we pay an export fee to opec to remove it from the countries we have oil in. He's in Uzbekistan right now working with Chevron and their government to remove the largest supply of crude oil just like that found in Saudi I guess the problem he says is that it contains sooo much sulfur that they have a problem as to where to put the sulfur. Uzbekistan is too small to surplus the stuff unlike Saudi they have the room... My uncles job is to figure out what to do with the surplus sulfur. Once they can up the production they say it will replace the need for Saudi. Theres is pretty much the only oil in the world thats not ours.
