Default Older Farts views

this is from the "Service Manuals' thread I started this morning......... read the comments.... I just can't say enough about this.

OK.... I'm an older guy and an older rider, I just hope this type of feedback(in the Service Manual thread)will help the younger guys, maybe the new HD owners save a few bucks and learn a little about their bikes. My day was WAY before all the computerized crap on bikes and high priced everything from the dealers. I can remember walking into a dealer and getting advise (being ASKED to come into the shop) IN the shop, they even showed you things on the bikes they were working on. Times have changed. But I would like to see the younger crowd and the "my kids are grown crowd" that they can have a little knowledge BEFORE they walk into the dealers. Dealers are in the business of making money, God bless them, but we ~ the consumer ~ MUST hang onto our cash. At any rate, even a little knowledge is worth something. The sevice manual is worth SO much more than some chrome or MOCO T Shirts........... Hey, do you EVER see Service Manuals out on the floor, NO you don't. only shinny crap and clothing............. thats where their money is. Sorry for being on my soap box but **** all I ever read is about buying this and that................LEARN from some of us older SOBs, chrome is like frosting on the cake, NOT the cake.

Well said !

Even if you don't do your own wrenching, at least
you can know what's being done!

Give that man a cigar and all the cold ones he wants. Very well said. A service manual should be the first thing every rider gets. Chrome is all nice but it won't get you home. Knowledge of your scoot will.

Don't what justifies "old fart" but I bought my first Harley 8 years ago at 34, first thing I bought was a Harley shop manual, bought an Ultra at 39 and bought the shop manual first thing. If I broke down in front of the closest Harley shop to me, I still wouldn't let those jerkoffs work on it! The only tool some people take on the road is a cell phone. Not me!

Ditto.. I can't see giving your cash to a dealer when you can take an afternoon or weekend and do the job yourself and know exactly how , what, and why that part you replaced does..

Don't buy into that crap, a real biker wings it, that 5/16"UNCbolt will go into a 5/16"UNF hole with a long enough cheater bar, a hammer and chizel will get the right torque on your "countershaft" sprocket. If you filter the old oil thru a sock you can keep using it forever! Don't need no stinkin' manual.

Come on Joe!! Don't fill' em in on where the rest of the fun is !! Nothing like a little bit of wrenching in the garage on a cold snowy weekend.

Service manual PLUS Parts Manual .... invaluable especially if you have an older model with the way HD constanlty changing part numbers from one year to the next.

I had an experience at my local dealer when I went to get needed piece. Went in armed with the part number and the parts guy said it was sure nice to have someone who knows the exact piece he needs for a change.

Sometimes wrenching is more fun that riding!
