Default Your Opinions Are Needed

I posted this in the Shovelhead section, but got no response. This is the forum that I spend most of my time and I value the quality feedback that I am reading in this section. So if you could give me your opinions, it would be greatly appreciated:

Below is a link with a few pics listed in photobucket, these aresome pics of my 1981 FXS Lowrider that I am about to place on the market to sell. What I am wanting to know from you guys is what is a fair price for this bike?

A little history about the bike. My brother bought this bike new in 1981. I bought it from him in 1994 with 7,000 miles on it. The bike now has 31,000 original miles. I know the history of this bike and it has been well maintaned it's entire life... the bike has never hit the ground. I had the top end rebuilt about 6,000 miles ago. The bike was bored .010 to clean up the cylinders, Harley pistons, Sifton cam, Crane Hi-4 Single Fire Ignition and S&S Super E. All the hoses and cables are stainless and as you can see from the pictures every part, bracket, bolt and nut has been chromed on this bike. I changed all the fluids last weekend, spark plugs, new battery, both tires are in good shape- this bike is ready to get on and ride. It doesn't smoke, have any leaks around the engine and the bike is mechanically in excellent shape. I have most all of the original parts and they will also go with the bike including the seat, carb, air cleaner, front fender, cam and assorted other goodies.

Would you take a look at the pictures and give me some ideas on what you think this bike will bring? Heck, you could even make me an offer if you were interested. I live in Kemp, TX that is about 50 miles south of Dallas.

Thanks for your input.

...O.K...you asked..so here it goes...i looked at the pics...first off, NICE BIKE...very well cared for obviously, and most important,(to me anyhow), it has the original paint in good condition. Now different areas of the country can have slightly different markets price-wise but here goes from the New England area....late 70's-early 80's Shovelheads generally go for between 5500-and 8000, of course depending on condition, in your case I think you may find that that bike might be closer to 9000.00 to 9500.00 because it is a good candidate for a restoration back to factory specs, and some wise people are starting to look for AMF bikes to restore and collect. AMF years, contrary to what most ignorant critics say, who talk the bikes down based on a lot of misconceptions, were the best years for styling. Some great styles came out of that ere, the Wide-Glide, the Low-Rider, etc...if it were not for AMF, there would be no HD today, and we would all be on metrics[:'(]....I had a 1984 Low Rider...granted, it was past the AMF years, but that was one sweet sounding, and riding bike. A 4-speed belt drive, kicker. man I wish I had that one back.....good luck with your sale Tex....Joe

It`s a tough market right now.Not just anyone will buy a shovel.I had the same bike in `81 but mine was bloodstone red and black.Paid $6180.00 in Nov. of `80.Traded it for my `91 Heritage in fall of `90 and he allowed me $4500.00 for it at time of trade. The heritage sold for $12,850.00 then.I drove the lo.ri. for 10 yr. for $1600.00,I was happy with the deal. But I wish I still had it.Unless time were tough and you need money,I would hang on to it if at all possible. But to answer your question as to what it`s worth I can say,(dunno) .You must have a price in your head what you want for it ,advertise it (nationally)and don`t accept a lower price than you want for it.I through these Prices in there for the benefit of you, and the other members that weren`t there when you could buy a new bike at a reasonable price.Take the heritage for instance-what is the difference between the new/old one (besides an ugly twin cam motor)which makes.....I digressed sorry.Good luck Bro and don`t give it away.Toby

I appreciate your feedbck guys and it is exactly what I was looking for was just a little round table & sharing of ideas.Money is not the reason for selling, it's just that after getting the Ultra I have no desire to ride the Shovel any longer. Although the Shovel is pretty cool to hop on and just go to town and back. My brother (who I bought the bike from) has a son that is 24, he knows how to ride and I thought about just giving it to him for sentimental reasons. I know that he would continue to love it just the way that his dad & I have.

I agree sweet looking Shuvel! I would like it as a second bike. But like you, what does a person need a second bike for? I also like the fact it is wearing its original paint! And agree it should sell on the high end value of the market given its obvious cared for condition and 2 owner history.
