While I realize everyonegets these bells to keep the gremlins away I come from a different school of thought. My brass bell was given to me by a friend after a co-worker died riding his 1 day old motorcycle to work on a rural country road. He was green as can be and lost control and ended up hitting a guardrail.
My brass bell is not to keep bad luck away but to remind me every time I clean my motorcycle of the friends I have lost riding motorcycles. In my life its simply called polishing the bell. While the dinger as long since fallen off the bell I still take time to clean my brass bell and remember those who lost their life doing what I so enjoy. My bell now hangs from the third motorcycle in 7 years. It shows the years but I don't want another one.
By the way I bought a brass bell and took it along with a cordless drill and attached it to an inside support of that damn guardrail closest to where my friend and co-worker hit and there it remains to this day. His name wasClay and he died April 4th 2001 and he has his bell too.
