Default GPS Wiring

All,

Just made the switch from a Wing to an Ultra Classic and have absolutely no idea of the right and wrong way to wire in various "safety chrome" items.

On the Wing I just added a fuse block terminal and wired everything to that. Would like to utilize the accessory switch on the fairing if possible as this would allow for not having a live power cord when the GPS isn't hooked up.

If it makes a difference, I'll be wiring up a StreetPilot III on the left handlebar.

Appreciate the help.

There is an accessory plug under the seat by the battery that can be controlled by the switch depending on how you wire up the plug.

There are a couple of different ways to hook it up.
You can use the cig lighter external or internal.
Do you need to have a power cable with an inline fuse?
Do you want your GPS to stay on when you turn off the bike?
Does you GPS have audio?

Here's what I did.
Is this kinda what you are looking to do?

Welcome from another recent ex winger, I made a splitter and wired it fused to the back side of the cigar lighter, You will be amazed at how easy it is to remove the fairing. I stripped the insulation, soldered a splitter taped and heatshrinked the splitter, took about 20 min including removeing and replacing the fairing. It is so much nicer to work on than the GL1800. I installed the Garmin SP 2730 and the XM antennae on top of the radio at the same time. I plugged a patch cord into the aux input on the front of the harmon kardon and listen to XM and the nav voice prompts. I put it on the right handle bar with a Ram mount. Outstanding. Watch the torx 27 screws they will work loose and disappear. Good Luck and enjoy the ride.

The man's exactly right. Just remember those torx screws have a torque spec of 25 in. lbs., that's if your using the original pre-formed shield.

There is several blank spade connectors for both ground and hot that are ignition hot. The are located on the left side of the fairing near the brace at the radio. This is where HD gets power when you buy one of thier GPS unit. I use this with out problem. I woulod use a low am inline fuse to protect you unit.
