I doubt the dealer has $9000. in it. Offer him $11500, and he makes sure your cam bearing has been taken care of. The problem included bikes built through 12/99. Also have them do an inspection on the swingarm. There is nothing wrong with the older brakes or the 3/4" axles. The FI does respond well with a PC if changes are made.

Just because there are newer models does not make older bikes inferior.

Does your DMV (and the banks in your area) use Kelly Blue Book or NADA?? Not sure about other states but Ky. uses NADA.

Seems like KBB values are always higher than those listed in NADA for the same vehicle.

Good luck with your trade.

....first things first..XXX is right...the cam bearing issue was all 99 and early 2000..so the bike you're looking at was definately affected...if the dealer can't produce evidence that the bearing was changed then assume you'll be doing it if he won't. But the more important issue to me is the price! No way, no how, would I pay that kind of money on a year/mileage bike like that....man. in this market that's a 10K bike all day....and Kelly Blue Book?..don't even get me going on that useless thing...we in the ins. industry never use that book...it's just a scam used by dealers to convince people they are gettin a deal on something...funny how they pull the little NADA book out when talkin about your trade in value...[8D]

EXACTLY! My dealer uses NADA.

It's your money, but I would shop some more before I paid $12,500 for a '99. This ain't the '80's and there are VERY good late model bikes out there people are unloading because of financial hardships...................shop hard and do not be a casualty!!!

I would watch the ads, although with riding season approaching quickly you might be less likely to find a "great" deal but a good deal should still be found, heck I got a "great" deal on my 07 UC Sept last year - paid only $16,999 before trade (sales person mis-quoted over the phone - theyhonoredthe quote). Keep you eyes open there are deals out there - BTW whats the rush to purchase?

Just so you are crystal clear on the cam bearing issue. Virtually every twin cam engine built before Dec. 14 1999 will have a rear cam bearing that will go defective period. All the 99' bikes (as they finished building them in or around june 99' and about half of the 2000 bikes).
This isn't something you can get to later, it must be adressed before it becomes a big problem. Many cam bearing failures have ended in catastrophic engine failure. No time is a good time for the bearing to go.
It's not a big deal, just has to be done.
And they want to much for that bike in this market. Sell yours, for whatever you get and be patient. If you can you should try for an 02' or newer. No bearing issue, Delphi fuel injection, 1" axles, and you'll find one with less miles.
Your economy is in a real slump, there are bikes out there and folks that need to sell.
A good rule of thumb these days is, an 04 low mileage dolled up nicely can be had for under $14,000, an 02' in similar condition under $12,000 an 06' under $16,000 and so on.
Check Craig's list, eBay etc.
Patience Grasshopper.

I had a 99 ultra until last year and had 49k on it. I did the cam shoes and bearings and had a techlusion fuel mgt and samson muffs with VH true duals. The FI system and engine ran great. Ihad no swing arm issues or other mechanical problems and rode several trips loaded VERY heavy. I had to change the drive belt and rear pully because a rock went through the belt and cracked the pully but that could happen any model year

i agree with most folks on here the price is way to high. Although it is almost impossible to gauge how long before the cam tensioner failure from what I have read it was mostly around 15k-20k miles.

I have a CA state seller's license and we never use NADA, finding it unreliable. We always use KBB and it's not to scam customers. Our offers are below KBB trade because as state-licensed sellers we are required by law to follow certain procedures to replace safety-related parts to better-than 50% wear requirements. The repair facility that does the work cannot be the same group that estimates the vehicle, etc., etc.

Newer isn't always better...I've had an '01 EFI through Stage I, II, and now III with flawless performance. Besides, other than the ECU, there's very little on new HD EFI systems actually made by Delphi. Magnetti-Marelli is and has continued to be a fuel-injection contractor for Harley-Davidson.
