Default comments/things to watch on '99s?

I am looking to buy an Ultra Classic and the local dealer has a 1999 w/37k miles,
lots of 'add-ons' like bag rails, engine covers, chrome floorboards, etc), new Venom
tires looks very well cared for.Kelly Blue book retail is $12,850. They are asking $12,900.
The bike has been there for a few weeks.
My Fatboy KBB is trade in @ $8625 (retail $12715).
and I am tempted to offer them $12,400 if they will give me $8800 for my trade.
(I have tried to sell mine for $10,000..but not even a nibble).
Since the 99's were the first to have the 88 C.I., are there any 'issues' I need
to know about? I don't care that it has cassette instead of CD.....but would like to know what maintenance problems there may have been......and hopefully after 37K, they have been corrected.
I have seen a 2000 U.C. w/65,000 miles, needed tires and not as 'clean' as the 99
for $10,500.

I have heard about cam bearings going bad.........but was it
before or after 30K miles?
I am leaning towards buying this bike......except for going backwards from a 2000
Fatboy to a 1999 UC.
The Ultra comes with chrome lower forks, Mustangs seats.......and on and on.
Gorgeous bike actually.
I kind of hate paying Blue Book to a dealer......that is why I will try
to get them to knock off a couple hundred here and there.
If they won't, then I gues I'll just finance a few more thousand, get a newer bike
from a different nearby dealer.
Anymore info about the bearings? Anything else?

I dont think there was a mileage limit on the bearings....basically luck of the draw.

Dang! luck of the draw. (never was good at that! LOL)
I am hoping that with 37k miles.......the bike is just broke in.
My 2000 has 43 K and runs like a champ.
I need to buy an Ultra classic/classic in a week or two...and this
one just seemed to fit my pocket book (if I can get it for 12,500).
Only draw back is the age.......but if it comes down to luck of the draw...
I may be screwed! LOL
It does look well cared, no rust or scratches. I will make a decision this weekend.
Still looking for more input though.

IMO, 12.9k is too high for a '99 with 37k miles.

A '99 might still have the "bad" rear cam bearing in it, will have the inferior old style brakes, will have the swingarm that is prone to cracking, andand will have the older, outdated, sometime troublesome FI system.

The issue with the cam bearings was resolved about 3 months into the production of the twincam in the 1999 models. If you don't know for sure, then I would take it home, spend $50 on the bearings, and replace them. My swingarm has 114K on it and I ride it HARD. This should be a MUST if you don't if they have been changed. Other than that, I wouldn't hesitate to compare a 99 with 37K to a 2004 with 37k. You'll have to live with single piston brakes and 3/4" axles. Other than that, ride it like you stole it.

Yes I realize 12,900 is HIGH .....but that is Kelly Blue book for
RETAIL (DEALER price)....hard to argue sometimes.
I am not worried about 'outdated' brakes...since I do not ride hard.
Swingarms cracking? I have never heard of this so will take it into
consideration.
I think I will offer the dealer 12,500....and see if I can get a 'HIGH
Kelly' on my bike...which will put me up by just short of a grand (The dealer
can still make a couple grand).
I can always finance a few thousand........and get a couple year newer bike.
Thanks for the info so far........
I will check back in the morning.

That is not true. All '99 models and some 2000 models got the weak bearing. I have a 2000, the letter from the MoCo telling me of the potential problem, and the old bearing in my tool box to prove it.

Swingarms? Here is a pic of one of the many that have cracked. It is not that uncommon.

I have over 50k on my 99. Early ones had a problem with the crank bearing making noise. (Fixed on later models. Cam bearings might be an issue. cam bolts were a recall. Injection runs just fine on a stock bike. Swing arm should have the adjusters replaced with ride str8 adjusters. Brakes are not inferior, just different. you can still stop on a dime if you know how to use what you have. And the pads last linger then the newer ones do. I know a guy that has been pulling a trailer with his and has well over a 100k on it.

That is too much money for a used bike.
