I have a '04 Springer Softail. Speedometer, odometer, and turn signal cancellation doesn't work. Did replacing the speed sensor take care of the same problems on your bike?
But as 66cruiser mentioned poor connections can have the same effect. The tech told me he found metallic "filings" on the magnetic part of the sensor itself, but he also applied dielectric grease to the terminals of the new sensor as a precaution. He said he's seen it happen a couple times on a single bike and especially on '07's. he also said that when washing the bike be careful not to directly spray a strong stream of water in the area of the bottom of the back cylinder, as that's where the connection to the sensor is, and it's best no to blast it with water. The bike runs great now. They also did a free remap of the EFI ( I have pipes and a high flow air filter), as Harley periodically comes out with updates. Didn't cost me a dime.
I have the same problem on my '07 FXST. I went to HD today and bought the sensor & he insured me that it is an easy fix. So, where can I locate the speed sensor to replace it?
(yep, laugh behind my back, if you want )
.
The HD tech pointed it out to me. It's behind the rear cylinder in the case and there's a harness with red and white wires going to it. Didn't look very easily accessible if you're gonna have to get down on the floor. Probably a piece of cake if you have the bike on a lift. But it's a regular service item, so it shouldn't be too bad. Could be a knuckle buster though.
I have had my speed sensor replaced once already, but now I am having spedo problems again. It works sometimes and sometimes it won't. It makes listening to the radio difficult because the AVC is always changing the volume.
The one thing that is different this time is that I can't switch back between the trip odometer and the regular odometer. I also can't reset the trip odometer.
I remove the speed sensor to clean it, but the new one is complete encased in plastic. There wasn't anything to clean...
I had the same problem with my 05 Eglide. The dealer replaced the sensor several times and also the speedo itself. I had the fairing apart to install a painted inner and discovered a loose ground on the upper triple tree. I tightened it up and haven't had a problem since.
You might want to look at the voltage regulator. I had an 02 heritage FI and had a problem with the speedo. Sometimes it would read, other times it wouldn't. The bike would idle differently as well when the speedo wasn't working. The odometer would go out every once in a while as well. It did throw a code, but everytime they checked it at idle, voltage was normal. They did find it when they went through the rpm range. It would trip or show itself at about 3000 rpm.
Once the voltage regulator was replaced, it never had another problem. This happened when the bike had around 25000 km's (15500 Miles) on it.
Ok, I know this is an old post, but here is my information. I have the same problem. Speedo goes up and down, intermittently as I'm riding. I spent the $60 and put a new sensor in.. No luck. I read on another post to try this. As your riding, reach down in front of the tank and move the harness up and down.
Sure thing, as I move it the speedo goes on and off. The previous post I read said that the wires are stranded and over time break. They found that the strands were making contact as you turn...
I'm going to investigate this weekend, but almost confident it's my problem. Now I wonder how many other wires are in the same condition? Should I change the harness? Ouch!
