What I'm finding after my speedometer actually fried, is that it's non of the above. No bad VSS, fuses, wires, or anything. The speedometer fried a resister. You can see it, it is discolored and burnt.
The problem is, hey let's upgrade for a replacement. So I chose 70900070B because it fits my 2005 Road King.
The installations instructions require a working speedometer still hooked up to the console before you begin. So, instead of asking if I may have plugged in to the wrong port, or check the fuse, or all the other stuff, it is irrelevant.
This upgrade has to have a working speedo, so then for a repair your SOL, and have to use the dealer, I think. There have been about 4 or 5 people in the world talking about the issue I'm having, and not one answer is available. Everybody want's to run through the check list. It's irrelevant in this case.
So, if you break a speedo, you have to take it to harley, but a mere vanity upgrade, they will let you do. I bought there speedo for 314 bucks, and told the mine was broke. They sold it to me anyways, and didn't tell me about this fn nightmare speedo scenario. It's only a speedo, and it's holding my Harley hostage!!!
I have an 03 ultra Classic Electra Glide 100yr anniversary edition and I was out riding it 2 weeks ago and I put the cruise control on, and i ended up having to stop at a red light and when the light turned green i went through the gears and got up to speed, and I noticed that my speedometer started jumping around and I also noticed that I lost my screen on the radio. I had NO other problems, my engine runs great and I have no problems with my turn signals or anything else. I am on disability and I'm trying not to take it to the Harley shop, because of their diagnostic fees, I love riding my hog but I'm a little scared to ride it to far away. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could be?

check where the hot wire goes into the copper thing that connects to the starter..
My friend has a 06 wide glide and his did the same thing but we can't pull a code up on it and after truning on the key the little key in the bottom right side if the speedometer stays on but with no turn signal and no speedometer reading. Has any body had this problem with there the bike runs good?
Hey guys, I'm having a little problem on my scoot right now. And I need some advice, I've been scouring the search pages here on HDF and i still have not come up with enough answers.
The other day I was riding and my speedo stopped working, The odometer was on but not recording miles. And my turn signals would not self-cancel.
Ok your probably gonna say to replace the speed sensor right? I'm planning on getting on tommorow and trying it.
BUT::::: When I come to a stop and let my bike idle, I wants to die, well actually it died about 5 times on the way home for me. It would start right back up again and run fine but as soon as you let off the throttle, it would idle down really low and eventually stop running.
Now. heres the question, I also notice that when I turn the ignition on, Normally the speedoneedle runs through its little thing by sweeping from one side to the other and back, But mine NO LONGER DOES THAT. It just kinda wiggles a little bit and stops.
Is that also related to the speed sensor????
I've checked continuity with a DVOM and all the wires have continuity. So I would rule out a broken or loose connection or wire. I have a Service Manual andin the wiring schematics it shows the 3 wire speed sensor as having these wires, RED= 12+, WHITE= signal, Black= Ground.
The red wire after checking it only has 8.64 volts. Is that right???
Maybe I'm chasing ghosts but I just need some good advise.
thanks for the help
So glad I found this thread. Was having the same problem with a sportster and started small with cleaning contacts in fuse block and replacing fuses and relays per another thread. Still had same issue. No speedo, no self cancel on signals, and bike sounded like it would want to die when coming to a stop. Followed this thread, bought a new speed sensor today and installed.....issues are cleared now. Thanks all for sharing this info!
