Default Need help!
Nicest weekend in a while coming up and wouldn"t you know it, the SG decided to act up for the first time in 2 yrs. It idles ok and throttle in neutral is ok. However, when I take off in first gear it sputters and dies. Any ideas? It has 22k miles.

Dirty fuel filter or low battery would be the first two things I would check.

Bad gas or water from condensation if it sat for a while maybe? Dirty injector?

Run some Chemtool B12 through it.

Thanks for the responses. I could understand fuel if it had a problem in neutral also but why would it only do it in gear?

I would try the fuel treatment and see if it works, that would be an easy fix if that is all that is wrong. Start with least expensive fix first. Hopefully that solves the problem, let us know. I'm curious

Possibly water in the tank. When you start sloshing the water and fuel around in gear the water reaches the fuel supply in the tank. Had a similar incedent on a four wheeler. Ran fine sitting still but once I got moving it got sucked in the the carb. Might not be the same as Fuel Injection.

sounds like a fuel filter problem to me... if it was an older bike. I say run some injector cleaner through it and see what happens...

My guess is that it is not a matter of being in gear. You can prolly put it in gear, keep the clutch disengaged and it will idle, and even rev up. When you put a load on it that it dies. Either starving for fuel, or the fuel is so diluted by water it does not want to run under a load.

Course it could be any number of other things..but either bad or not enough fuel are the most likely and easiest to eliminate.

Yep check the water in the fuel thing first then look to see if ya got crap in the carb or something clogging the main jet . Good luck!

Thanks all. Funny thing, I think she just wanted to go for a ride in the trailer. I loaded it up and took it to dealer to test ride and wouldn't you know it, I unload it and it runs fine. My guess is something was stuck and got dislodged by a bump. Anyhow, got 450 miles in this weekend.
