Thinkin seriously about steppin up from my 06 Heritage Softail Firefighter edition to an 08 Ultra Classic Firefighter Edition cause that seems the way to see the country. Anyone hear any problems with fly by wire throttle or anything. Probably gonna do Air Cleaner,Vance and Hines true duals and SERT.I ride all year here in Pennsylvania.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ride safe Bull
I recently moved into the Police Officer Special Ultra and have had no problems. Moved up from heritage springer and it really is a sofa on two wheels. You won't regret the trade up! JEEPCJ
bull,
Do it man, you won't reget it! I have always let the first year of production changes pass before a big purchase and that has been a good move IMO. The fly by wire works just like a car with no issues that I know of. You will hear of some hesitation issues here on the forum though. I also found a thread about that. The apparent fix for it is just cycling the ignition 4 times to let the ECU set idle position. Another thing to consider is how you are going to stage the bike. I would recommend any AFTERMARKET part as much as possible trying not to buy dealer stuff. OEM stand for Outragesly Expensive Mistake. You can stage the bike more effectivly for a fraction of the price with better results using your prefered "re-cal" method (Fuel-Pak, PC111) slip-ons and A/C all aftermarket. Look up "IED enrichment device" in the forum and see what you think there too. I have yet to take delevery of my new EGC but I have bought all the parts to stage 1 the bike for $452 using homemade IED devices, Fuel-pak, used V&H slip-ons, and SE A/C. You may find running the V&H true duels you mentioned a loss in low end torque granted as well as a loss in heat on the leg. The best place for info on all this is the forums, and the best place to buy IMO is Eastern Performance Cycles. The most important thing you need to do is be sure what you want first befor you go buy a bunch of stuff. All these great people here will help you figgure it all out. Congrats in advance for the new scoot I know you will end up with....."come on man, everybodys doing it"!
Welcome brother, Local #2532 here in Va. I moved from a '02 RKC (30,000 miles) to an '08 Aniv. Ultra and the new ride is great. Lowered with a set of Progressive 412-HD.Did AC, V&H slip-on's, Fuel-Pak and the performance is perfect. The fly-by-wire is good. You'll be happy with the move.
This class of bike certainly has its advantages for seeing many miles. My '08 UC has given me excellent service with no issues.
I might suggest that should you make the leap, ride the bike for awhile before making mods to the AC or exhaust...you might be surprised at its stock performance and sound.
As a retired fire fighter, I've looked into Harley's FF edition bikes. This thread made me go look at them again and they don't list an Ultra Classic version. They do list the FLHTP Electra Glide. It's got the 103 ci engine and is available with ABS as are all the 08 touring models but I don't get the impression that there's much else on it that's equivelant to a UC. It has a solo seat and no tour pack. It's a fine looking ride in it's own right, it's just no UC if that's what you really want!
FWIW and good luck with whatever decision you make!
Recentely traded my Heritage for an '08 UC. I miss the styling of the Heritage sometimes, but I ride 2 up a lot and we are taking longer and longer rides. No comparing the comfort or the amenities of the UC
Don't regret trading it for a moment and have had no problems with it at all.
Absolutely one of the best moves I've ever made. 100% total biking satisfaction. The flly-by-wire throttle is flawless. Removing the associated cables gives it a much cleaner look.
Saw that they may not make the FF Special for '08? I have the '07, moved from an 04 RK, which was also a FF Special. The Ultra is GREAT, I like everything about it...you can actually get used to being called a "Geezer" when riding the "Geezer Glide".
