if you don't want the rack on there all the time, go to the hardware store and get 4 small plastic plugs. they have serrated **** that hold them in place and are easy to remove from underneath. i have black ones but you can find chrome ones too,
Trailer is a good option. Get a good one and you will never know it is behind ya! unless you forget and park wrong... One think I miss about my gold wing... reverse!

The spare lid is the best suggestion yet. Paint the one your going to drill through in bumper black and you won't have to worry about bungee hook scratches either. Another suggestion is the trailer. I hear nothing but good things about the single-wheel one out of europe, people forget it's even there while riding.
I'm avoiding it so far...I like the clean look. Then again I am mamma so I don't have a passenger often enough not to use my back seat as the luggage point.
