Default installed cruise control

I installed cruise control on my 06 streetglide today, took about 4 hours taking my time. The only problem I had was I pinched a wire(can't find)or something tightining the throttle on the bike and kept popping the the igintion fuse. Never could find the problem so used a small rubber spaceron top screw for throttle assembly. Not the greatest but it worked. Any how if your thinking of cruise you can easily do it yourself the instructions are very good and the shop manual helps. The dealer wanted 4 hours to do this. If you did this on a couple of bikes there is no way it should take more then 2 hours. If anyone knows why my throttle assembly is shorting out let me know.

Cheers

If you don't have a blown fuse when the housing isn't fully tightened, but do when the housing is tightened, there is a wirehas been pinched and the insulation abraided enough to expose some wire that contacts the lower housing where it meets the handlebar. I had a similar problem and those thin insulated wires make it difficult to spot the culprit, but it's there.

On my '07 the manual was essential to determine proper placement of the pins in the harness, which was not in the instructions. Your '06 has a different part number and I'm glad yours was so easy to install, as mine referred more than once to the manual, then made you search for the pin assignment info in the electrical section. That took longer than any other step in the process, and just putting the info in the instructions to begin with would've made the job far easier. I often think HD does these things to make DIY installs difficult, coaxing some with less perseverence to give up and take it to the dealer. Maybe that decreases tech-support calls and increases sales of manual, but I resent the hassles!

tdog, you're a better man than I.

It took me a lot longer to install the cruise control in my '06 Electraglide Classic. I'de only had the bike a few months and it was really the first thing I did that required removing parts like the grip and faring.

Instructions are ****. Had to refer the the shop manual to find every screw and technique. Couldn't believe was a pain replacing the throttle was. Lost one of the ferrels. Got so tired I adjusted the cable slack another day.

All said and done, with the 25% off on the parts and DIY on labor it is an option I could not have afforded from the dealer.

I installed the cruise control kit on my 03. Easy job all in all. Part of the instructions were terrible, expecially where the cable hooked into the carb. They ommitted some key info. Otherwise it was ok. Didn't take long at all.
Only thing I don't like and can't figure out, is why they don't have it set so you can use the friction screw when warming the bike up. The enrichener will foul the plugs. Sucks to hold the throttle open for 5 minutes or more when it cold out.

Anyone came up with a fix for this?

yea I don't know why the friction screw can't be used. I guess I need to take my housing apart one more time and take the throttle cable off and check under for an exposed wire. Thanks

Took about 6 hours on my '07 RK but that included lunch and running back to the dealer for a replacement head lamp that I broke taking it off, $13.00. All in all not too bad of a job but I would not want to fight with the throttle again.
