Didn't anyone else get a users manual with their bike? Page 36 in mine says the "kill switch" is used to start and turn off the bike.
Ride well,
Jim
Actaully its in there multiple times.
BTW...I have never walked away from my bike with the lights on...forget to lock it yes..leave the ignition on No. I do leave the ignition on and switch it to accessory once in a while to listen to the radio while waiting for someone.
I actually have used both methods. But awhile back I read an article somewhere ,possibly American Iron magazine that stated some guys were having speedometer problems. The fix according to HD was to always turn off the bike w/ the kill switch first. This may have been isolated to sportsters and,or Dynas. Also ,to me it might be slightly safer being in the habit of killing the engine before taking your hands off the bars.
On My old 02 RK I didn't think it mattered. I used the ignition sometimes, kill switch others. I fried two spedo sensors, and remembered that they failed shortly after shutting down using the ignition switch. Was told by HD that using the Ignition switch to shut off bike throws a voltage spike into system anf can cause problems. I never had another Spedo sensor fail after using the kill swithch to shut down, then shut off ignition. My .02
Silliest discussion ever, use the damn ignition switch to shut your engine off. Kill switch is for emergencies and offers you another means of stopping the engine while keeping accessories running. I flipped my quad upside down in a ravine once, it was upside down and running and I was contorted. I was able to use my boot and hit the kill switch - true story
Not really an issue any more on the new Softails they only have a run/stop switch. No ignition just a fob, the only key we got was to lock the front forks.

Even sillier thinking the OP is still monitoring this thread thirteen (13) years later.
