Advice
Hi all,
Before I ask advice this is my first Harley so please allow for any stupid questions.
I bought a 1990 Electra Glide Ultra, 44k miles. The clutch was badly adjusted and slipping, not sure why but there was no slack in the clutch cable. I have set this to about 2mm of slack and this seems to have got rid of most of the slipping except in top gear. Whats the opinion new clutch or the current plates are glazed? maybe just a bit of time to bed back in or am i clutching (no pun intended) at straws.
Second question, how difficult should it be to start the big twins? from cold it to forever and didn't like to idle, lots of misfire at low RPM. To add to this starting from luke warm although better still farts and bangs until a good few minutes have passed. Even small twists of throttle can cause the bike to misfire and stop any ideas?
Lastly, I have what sounds like a cam chain rattle when riding. From what i understand Harleys are push rod so no cam chain, am I looking at engine or possibly some body work rattle.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards
J

Howdy, J! Hang tight - thar'll be someone along purty quick-like that'll help ya with yer issues. Ah'm by no means an expert on 'em, but one thang that strikes me is the cold start/warm start issue. This is a carbed bike, so ya may need ta play with the choke settings a bit ta find which one the engine wants. With so many fuel injected engines today, most folks forget that the system is automatically enriching the fuel settings as needed.
Hopefully ya bought the scoot right, so that you've got $$$ aside ta address any issues. Ya have a 17 year-old machine thar, an' unless ya know its' history, ya don't know what may be in the future. But ah'd be willin' ta bet yer gonna enjoy it, no matter what!

Cheers, yep a real steal... Got quite a chuck of history, not the best loved bike but given a few months things will change. Quite a change from the Super Bikes i am used to riding, but everyone should have a Harley once in there life, and so far it's cracking fun, comfy, load and brings a smile.
Don't mind the work bringing up to scratch, but I can bet I will have a good few post over the next few weeks.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good wrenches on this touring section, but you also might want to post in the Evo section. They deal with the Evo engined on a daily bases. Good Luck
Congrats J,
Once ya get her settled down to where she purrs for ya, you'll fall deeper in love with her.
Sooooooo true, everyone has to own a harley at least once..
I'm doing my second so far and am admitting that i'm pure novice.
