Been nursing my 87 evo along for the last couple of years. Ran pretty well, but with 40K miles since the last rebuild and 140k on the bottom, I figure I've got my money's worth over the past 20 years.
Plan was to run it 'til it died then get a 113"
It was starting to develop issues I didn't feel really want to deal with Base gaskets etc... and the 6 speed I dropped in last summer worked it pretty hard out on the highway.
Found a low mileage 88" Revtech locally for a couple of grand but the missus wouldn't abide. In her mind since I was never going to get rid of the bike, why not get a new motor that wouldn't have any questions with.
God I love that woman!
So ordered it is.

After it's broke in, when the day is just right and you yank the throttle open all the way in low gear for the first time; as that 113 reaches 5+ grand you will get a smile on your face and it will all be worth it.
You certainly will need a clutch up grade, or that first time handfull of throttle will net you clouds of clutch smoke only.You are going to want have sex after a good ride on that hot rod.Good Luck
Got the engine on Thursday... Those folks at Jireh ship fast... delivered to my garage door. It was gorgeous out of the box. Came with carb and ignition installed. Air cleaner and points cover not installed, I guess for ease of shipping.
There are two welded rings that look like they would fit the exhaust ports. Can anyone confirm? I am used to the pressed steel mesh type.
After I got my frame cleaned up I hoisted that sucker in and it fits pretty well. I thought I would have frame to rocker top clearance issues, but I think there is actually more room than with my old engine.
The only clearance problem was the left forward corner of the front rocker hitting the frame. I had to clearance what seemed like a lot of frame to finally get maybe a 1/16th of an inch of clearance. (2nd pic)

Does anyone know if 1/16th of an inch is sufficent to accomodate thermal expansion? I would hate to get it installed and find out it rubbed the frame at operating temps. Not comfortable taking anymore out of the frame.

Now that you thinned the frame take a ball peen hammer, put the round end on the frame and wallop it with another until you put a dimple in the area where you need it. Wear safety glasses as there is a remote possibility of one of teh hammers chipping. You should have .060-.080 clearance at least, if you have this then disregard the above. The rings are exhaust gaskets. Hope this helps.
Got the engine and clearanced properly. Ran oil lines this AM and test fit the primary.
Am using a new alternator and rotor from Ultima.
It appears that with the rotor in place, there is not much main shaft tooth showing and as a result, the comp sprocket and clutch basket appear to be misaligned. Comp sprocket sticks out by about 1/4".
Pictures show straight down views of both.
Furthermore, the outer primary won't fit either... it hits on the comp nut.
When I installed the 6 speed last sumer, I had to use a 25T comp sprocket. The bike is an 87. I ordered a complete 25T comp sprocket assy, but it didn't fit right. So, I used only the 25T sprocket. The rest of the parts are original. Thinking maybe that there were some changes over the years.
Any ideas?
I'm thinking I should have saved the comp sprocket stuff I had.
