I have an 05 Softail Heritage Classic with 10,881 miles. I bought it with 8,300 miles and noticed right away that it was low on oil. The original owner said that was news to him. I took it in to the dealership and they agreed it was low, but no reason was given. They suggested doing a 10K service on it so all the fluids would be new and we would know what was there. So I did the 10K service at 8300 miles.
In 2100 miles it has used over a quart of oil. I rode 165 miles yesterday and when I got home (engine hot) the oil just touched the dipstick.
Long story short. I just left the dealership and they said they were 99% sure it was eating oil because of the valve guides (someone has suggested the valve seals???). the bike is out of warranty so I am in for a nice repair bill. The guys at the dealership suggested that I go ahead and put in a “big bore” kit while it is down. They are suggesting the 95 CI upgrade. I have V&H long shots with a Screaming Eagle air filter now. I know I will need to add a tuner into the mix.
Any ideas or suggestions…
THANKS !
My 05 used a qt. every 1,500 miles, all of it going out the rear cylinder. I had an indy replace the seals on the rear cylinder only at a cost of $240. That was over 15,000 miles ago, no more oil usage. I bought the bike and it was out of warranty but only had 4,000 miles on it at the time.
