Default hot hot oil temps

i have an 08 street glide and have the stage 1 from motofuel with the pc3 and the modified rush pipes. well yesterday i got stock in a lot of traffic in manhatan and noticed my oil temp went to 270F. is this alot for this engine or is something that can be handled for a long time. i also have added the oil cooler when i bought the bike.

Because these are air cooled engines you'll see the oil temp go up dramatically if you are idling too much. If it just hit 270 for a minute or two, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've been through this hi temp thing a bit and have posted info about it, rather than have you search here's a quick summary:

2005 Ultra is my first HD. Man was this thing hot, so hot I took it back and was told all was normal. Purchased a Digital thermometer, boiled it in water along with a candy thermometer to make sure it was accurate. Highway run for 30 minutes, oil temp between 260-270 on a 75 degree day. This seems hot to me. Took it back to HD and they said, nope that's normal. I told them that bike was too freaking hot and was burning my legs even with jeans on. Uncomfortable to ride in 80+ degree temps. My air cooled Yamaha with a bigger engine never ran like this??? I learned later that the Yamah has ceramic composite or some such thing around the cylinders. Anway...

I swithed two holes to Mobil 1 syn and put RedLine Heavy Duty in the other.
Stage 1 with SE slip ons with a PC III. This helped a bit, not that much to be honest. Maybe lowered it 10 degrees under the same riding circumstances. I then put on RJ's orginals and it of course doesn't lower the engine temp, but make the bike a lot more comfortable to ride. I can't even imagin how you guys are riding the touring bikes with the bigger engines (temp wise). In all honesty, even though I love my ultra, if HD doesn't do something ie... water cooled. This will probably be my first and last HD. I can't see buying a new one with a bigger engine just to ride an uncomfortably hot bike.

Just my .02.
Joe

I guess it's all relative. Compared to my Yamaha V twin 1600 Air cooled there is no camparison. I could ride the Yamah all day in shorts if I wanted in 100 degree temps. I did a poker run in 90 degrees with a passenger on the Ultra and she swore she wouldn't ride the thing again! That was when the bike was stock. I'm not a mechanic so I can only guess at why Yamaha seems to be able to make a big air cooled engine run no where near as hot as a Harley. What I've heard time and time again from other HD guys is "Yep, it's a Harley and they run hot". Maybe compared to other HD's the Utltra just isn't so hot, but being new to Harley I was SHOCKED at the heat comming off the engine.

I too was suprised by the heat coming off mine. I remember a guy in Sturgis last year look at me on my VTX1300 and say I was lucky to have a liquid cooled engine. I suppose this summer I will know exactly what he was talking about... I also stopped by the dealers and asked about engine temp. - the service manager said to not be suprised if it got close to 300F... Ouch (er, I mean sizzle)...
