Sorry, friend. It looks like you've got the wrong backrest. The one for the King TP is all one piece.

From original post to profanity in only seven minutes--must be a Forum record.

Actually, TP's since '06 (comfort stitch style) OEM on EG Classics are two-piece with the backrest mounting to the lid, and the pad mounting to the bottom using two bolts. I know 'cause I checked the HD parts book and later purchased a new, in the original box, version on Ebay for about 1/2 the list price.

RW, as a relative newb, you might consider saving the profanity for use elsewhere.

As for installing the pad, and assuming you don't have a real bike to check for comparison, take the pad and hang it upside down to locate where the holes should go since you will use the holes in the pad to know where the holes go. Before marking anything, keep the pad in position and allow it to fold over on itself--correct installation will have the top edge of the pad even with the top of the TP's bottom and centered. Once you have it properly located, lift the pad up so you can mark the location for the holes. Select an appropriate drill bit size for the hardware you are going to use. Consult the HD parts book or buy your own based on the depth of the pad attachment point, the thickness of the TP, and whether you are installing a TP pouch as well. The OEM installation uses acorn nuts on the inside of the TP for the installation.

Also, you don't say how old the TP is; if it's older than '97, the holes in the lid will be a little high so when the backrest is mounted the bottom of the lid will be visible below the backrest. If that's the case, just drill new holes slightly lower than those already present. If the TP is '97 or newer, then no problem.

Good luck with your project.

By th etime I got done writing Harleypingman set you up. He is 100 % correct. Hold the paded part up put the screws in and the pad simply lays down. See profanity was not needed. Easy job.

RW: The guys who answered earlier weren't wrong since HD still sells backrests with the pad attached to the backrest. Also, I've seen seperate pieces offered on Ebay that simply had the backrest seperated from the backrest.
