I like looking over , but looking through I think provides better protection. This spring I have been hit twice by bugs that felt like a rock hit me in the face, and one was right between the eyes, just over my riding glasses. I am about to try a larger to look through. I have a Harley 9.5 that I look right at the top of, and it is will make me either strain to look over or slouch to look under.. If anyone needs a 9.5 I will trade for a larger one or make ya a deal on it.
I currently have a 8 inch clearview 6.5 inch clearview stock 4 inch and the 9.5. I am windshield poor
Over if it can be done without buffeting.....
I have the clearview 8" with recurve.....

I run a 10" for the colder spring, fall rides and an 8" in the summer. Always look over, there is a little wee bit of buffeting from the 8" but not so much as to bother worrying about.
If you only ride a few thousand miles a year sun shine and 80 degressor just up to the bar and park it makes little difference.
the reason you should be able to look just over the windsheild is.
Fog no madder what you treat it with riding on a cool morning or evening you ride into a low spot instant fog on the sheild you peek over keep riding.
Rain look thought eye protection and a sheild in rain really cuts down vision and the fog thing comes in to.
bug and road grime can build up even on short rides nice to look over the top and get a clearer view
trucks passing or you come up on one splasing stuff up on shield agin nice to look over the top get a clearer view.
Get the height right it protects you from bug and crap being throw up at you it redirects the wind making a better ride.
Get the sheild wrong and you do fight a lot of wind some times worst than not having one at all.
Or you set your self up of times when you may have very limited vision for a short time.
It is recommended to look over the windshield...............that way dew, mist, bugs, or reflections won't interfere with your vision.
Sit on your bike in your normal riding position, have someone hold a 4' level even with your eyes and mark a point on the stock windshield 2" down. That is the proper height of the windshield you should be using.
I just replaced my stock shield on my Ultra.Looked thru that ...very difficult when raining.Baught an 8" smoked recurve from clearview shields.Man this thing is BADA$$.At 6'1" I look well over this shield but wind buffeting is 1"-2" above my helmet even.SOOOOO much nicer looking over than thru.
