Getting things gathered up to dothe 1000 mile service on my 2008FLHTC.Checked the service manul for the correct grease for the steering head bearings and it showed Special Purpose Grease part no. 99857-97. Looked in the 08' parts manual in the maintenance section (page 77) and it said that wheel bearing grease part no. 99856-92 was for steering head bearings for bikes other than '97 later Softail and Dyna. Okay, which one to use. Called HD custoner service and after several calls back and forth to confirm what I was talking about, they (a nice lady named Roxanne) said that the service manual was wrong and that the wheel bearing grease (part no. 99856-92 ) was correct. Just thought I'd post this to let others know.
Well there's a bazillion bikes out there with the steering head bearings lubed with the Special Purpose Grease. Wonder if this voids the warranty now.
LOL! Don't sweat the small stuff! Use a good high quality waterproof heat resistant grease and pump the neck full. The method of getting those bearings greased is a crappy design/system imo.
Actually any good quality wheel bearing grease from any auto parts store will work just
fine.
Harley does NOT manufacture it's own lubrication products.
Nor cleaners or waxes or any other chemicals.
They have all this bottled under their label from some other major maufacturer of the
product. and then in most cases charge you more for it, because it has the HD bar and shield on it!
