I couldnt decide between those two so I bought the Electra Glide Classic. I dont think either one is a bad choice. I dont want lowered suspension so thats a minus for the SG and to me so is the seat, low windshield and passenger footpegs. As for the EG the brushed engine may be a minus.
I bought the EG standard because I didn't want the radio and I actually preferred the machined look of the motor. When I had the 103 put in, I used the black jugs....kind of a shovel head look. I put a color matched Road Glide front fender on it, a Street Glide seat I bought from a guy, and I cleaned up the lights with the bullet set ups. As far as shocks go, I am going to buy a set of Street Glide shocks from a guy who went with an air set up. I probably don't have more than 500 or 600 bucks into the bike, not counting motor work, and I'm real satisfied with the result. Oh yeah, an extended tank panel, too. So add whatever one of those cost. I sure don't have $2,200 into it.
Given the fact that we all pretty much work on our own bikes (adding stuff, etc), why would you buy a bike and then have to add even MORE stuff to it when you can buy a bike with MOST things already on it.
For me, niether one completely fit my bill. I wanted the passing lamps and the radio. I can add the passing lamps cheaper than the radio and speaker's. (mark one for the SG). I'm 5-11 with a 31" inseam, so I needed the lower seat height (another one for SG). And to mention, the mods I would be doing anyway were less with the SG, mark up another one. And the things I would have added to the EG wouldn't have been covered under warrenty (radio mainly). I buy a new bike, I want it covered for two years. The SG just has a sleeker/sporty look to it. All in all, everything pointed to the SG so that's what I got.
Tell I went with the EG Standard 2 years ago. I don't regret it. But I will tell you this I do like the SG looks better, and over the past 2 years I know I've spent more than $2100 on fixing up my EG STD to look like the SG. Lesson learned for me. But my EG is mine and done my way for my style of ride. That is the great thing about Harley, you can dress them anyway you like.
I'm on my second EGS and am very happy with how it has turned out. For me, the radio is a complete waste of money. You can hardly hear the damn thing over the wind and exhaust noise. If I want music, I use a mp3 player and ear buds, not to mention the extra weight the system puts on the front end. The black engine looks great when new, but the finish is hard to maintain.Also, there is big markup in the EGS (all of them for that matter..). Last July, Lakeshore HD in Illinois was selling them for 14.8k + TTL-far below a SG. I live in Houston now, but wouldn't hesitate to make a road trip if I got in the market for another new scoot.
The lean angle question has to do with the taller suspension (13" rear shocks) versus the lower suspension (12" rear shocks) that's all.
The Street Glide has quite a bit more chrome on the engine , which adds up quickly if you add it later (EGS).
The Street Glide has a much prettier dash with the more stylish gauges , the EGS is actually missing the bottom 2 gauges.
The Street Glide has the nicest rear fender setup (looks wise) with the facia and closer directionals than the EGS.
The Street Glide kinda screams "cool" right from the start.
The standard is really the "blank slate" bike for those who like to do the customizing them selves.
The standards seat is a bit more comfy (uglier) and blocky looking.
The standard has much better night time lighting than the Street Glide.
I'm not a radio fan , so I have the glove compartment in mine , which I use all the time.
The standard is a very utilitarian bike for those who just want to ride the wheels off them , or for a great custom project starter.
That's pretty much it....

My wife selected the Road King Classic as her bike, but she doesn't know how to ride. Lately she has been getting the itch to learn how to ride and will claim her bike back. (Conviently after I am almost done with the accessories) I will have to get another bike and I really like the SG but was looking at the EG Standard since it was cheaper. I know I will want a better radio and speakers which is why I don't mind the EGS and with all the cusomizing I plan on doing I think the EGS would have been a better start but I'm not feeling that silver engine.
