I just purchased a detachable tour par for my 08 FLHTC, I was wondering if anyone has installed this thing? And is it a bitch to install? Pros or Cons? Thank you
I'm assuming the tour pak you bought has the detachable hardware on it. you will still need the detachable hardware kit for the bike. The install is simple. If you don't need to buy anything i think i have a set of instructions I could find and fax to you.
The docking hardware itself can be a royal pain in the rear. The instructions suck. Toss them in the bin. Worth the effort though if you have a stubborn one like some have had.
Got mine installed no problem on my '08 EGC - directions for the docking points suck... common sense applys here. You may have to bend the end of the rack slightly where it connects to the docking points.. use a big crescent wrench. While you are installing the docking points the fender has a tendency to twist out of shape a little, making it hard to get the bolts in. I used a small jack with wood to support the fender from the back - that really helped in lining up the holes to install the docking points bolts. I also installed the tourpak lock.. only again, ignore the directions that tell you to install it on the right side.. it doesnt work that way on an Electraglide Classic/Ultra you need to install the lock on the left side; and you also need to bend the key.
I just put one on. It is a pretty tight fit but the one thing I noticed was the rear portion on the detachable rack would want to catch on the saddlebag latches (inside toward the fender). Took a little tweaking but the bike looks better for the times when yer not tourin'.

And yes. Getting the holes in the fender to line up for the bolts was really a PITA!
I found the install not to bad putting the tour pak back on to b the biggest pain to line up it, I have the wife help makes it alot easier. just my take
Unless your passenger is built like a bean pole, you will find yourself wanting to move the TP back a few inches. No big deal to do it. Some buy a kit, I just redrilled a couple of the holes in the mounting bracket.
