In fifth gear my 08 SG tranny sounded like a turbine engine about to break-up. I called the dealer & got the response that we’ve all heard…the noise was due to the gear cut (which most of us already knew) and there is nothing wrong. Regardless, with 2500 miles, the whine was bothersome and rather than do something radical, I decided to switch to 75-90 gear oil.
I used 24 oz of 75/90 Lucas Synthetic Gear Oil and added an additional 8 oz of Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer for a total of 32 oz (1-quart). After draining the Harley stuff and adding the Lucas, I took it out for a fifty mile ride. Wow…What a difference!
Immediately, I found that shifting was easier and gear chatter in 1-4 and 6th was almost eliminated. As far as 5th is concerned, the gear whine was probably cut in half. So much so, when my buddy was riding next to me on his 08-SG (and we were both in fifth) I could actually hear his 5th gear whining (louder) over mine. You still get the "whine" when accelerating or decelerating, but it has been reduced significantly.
I live in South Florida and considered using the heaver gear oil (due to high ambient temps), but wanted to try this first. So far, I am very pleased with the outcome. I will be experimenting with the primary next…any input?
