I have tried the shorty's, Tune Trapper and powered antennas.

The shorty's were visible and the shorter you went the less reception you had. The billet 6" was useless. The generic rubber antennas worked the best.

The Tune Trapper (goes behind the fairing) worked very well onthe OEM radio and is worthless on an aftermarket radio.

The powered hidden antenna has worked well so far on my aftermarket radio. Not a whip antenna by any means however as good as a short rubber antenna.

Some friends have the Dakota they paid $75 for and I have an Advance Auto Parts powered antenna hidden in my fairing and it works 10 times better. Just my $.02.

Have the Biketronics version. Works ok but never had an external antenna to compare.

Put whip back on after using TT. I'm of the impression farring antennas work good inflat heavly populated areas. Mountian regonsand further into the boonies (or my driveway) got so good.

I think you hit it on the head here. I think the FM signal probably doesn't travel too far and stays fairly close to ground. If the stock antennae sticks up so much higher than any hidden one it will still pull in a signal after the hidden one has reached the outer limits which will happen sooner on hills than flat areas.
