Default Battery Tender

After riding I hook up the battery tender on and the red light on the charger comes on for about three hours. Is that normal? I have a new charging sys but have not replaced the battery. Is it possible that the battery needs to be replaced. Gauge on the dash shows 12.5 volts while riding. If I run the driving lights the meter after riding a couple of hours goes down to about 9 volts. Volt meter on the battery while engine is idling says 14 volts.

If your battery voltage is dropping when turning on your driving lights, you are using up more battery power than is being replaced by your charging system, which I would think indicates a problem with the charging system rather than the battery. Your total usage would have to be quite high to exceed the wattage put out at cruising RPM's. You don't say what bike or year you have, but the new systems on the touring models are putting out 600+ watts.

I have had the same expereince with my battery tender for last 3 motorcycles. The battery tender is pushing the voltage up slightly above normal. As long as the tender is not charging longer than a few hours, you're fine! The battery tender will prolong the battery life. I leave mine on the charger at all times. My last FLHR original equipment battery lasted 5 years!

Can't speak to the battery voltage issue...but that definitelysounds like something that should be checked right away.

When you are riding and your gauge only show 12.5 volts, I would get your charging system checked out. While running, you should be around 14.5 volts. When you turn the driving lights on you are draining the battery, sooner or later it will go dead.

Get it checked.

Have you checked your dash gauge against your hand held gauge?? Could be your gauge is reading low. If they read the same you need to get your system checked out as the electronic ignition will cease to function at around 9 volts.

If I put the tender on after coming back from a run on either my concours or 03 EG, it goes straight to flashing green. The only time i had something akin to your description the battery packed up about 2/3 weeks later.
